Does this work if you simply plug it in to a usb power supply (and not hook it up to the computer)?

Probably not,you have to have Razers website to save and be able to control the colors on there chroma devices..altho when i first plugged into usb on pc it does seem to go to a default color pattern..to mofify that you need to install the Razer Synapese< srry prob a typo there lol hope this helps..enjoy the chroma products,,i have mousepad.mouse,keyboard.the patterns u can get are awesome..

Hahaha good question. Besides being a mouse pad/mat, it's more of a visual accessory with the RGB lights around the edges. The mat has a harder surface than a normal mouse pad which I actually prefer. It seems to capture my mouse's movement more accurately - in my opinion. If you don't care for having pretty RGB lights on the underside of your mouse pad nor the harder surface, then you don't really need this. Personally, I enjoy it and thought it was worth it - to each his/her own.

Can you put two of the Razer Firefly's in the same system?

You can, but its very possible that they synapse software wont distinguish between the two. So while they will both work, its hars to speak as to if synapse will function properly.
