can I connect this to a single port Ethernet jack to run 2 computers?

Definitely!  Any of the 5 ports can be used as an "uplink" (a connection to another switch).  Therefore, you could use this to connect 4 computers to a single Ethernet jack.

I use the one I bought for exactly that purpose.  I have my cable modem in one room, along with a router and another switch.  With just one long Ethernet cable running from there to my home office (the "uplink"), this switch connects 2 laptops and a networked printer.

Question 2

I need more ethernet ports added to my U-Verse router. It has only 2 or 3. Can this be used?

This should do the trick for you. Just connect your U-Verse router to the number 1 port on the back of the switch. You'll be able to use the one or two open ports on the back of your U-Verse router in addition to the 4 open ports on the switch to connect devices to the internet.

Can I connect this switch directly to my modem, then send one port to my wireless router and another to my Vonage device? (For some reason, after many years of flawless operation, my Vonage is not communicating with my wireless router through the router's ethernet out. My modem only has one ethernet port. so this is how a charter technician advised me to fix it. Will it work?

The technician gave me the same info as Robert, but the prevailing advice I find online is on the side of Scott. I want it to be as simple as Robert says, but I fear it isn't. I want it to be like setting up a guitar amp and effects, but it seems hat there is a bit more to it—not just plug in everything and they communicate. Frustrating. 
I may have bigger problems. It seems that no LAN ports on my wireless router are sending info, and running a line straight from my modem to my PC yields no connection, despite the fact that the modem going into my wifi router is sending a signal.
I feel like I've tied things in a knot that is really hard to untie.
I also feel like a dope, because I'm sure this is remedial-level networking stuff.

Question 6

Will this allow ports to operate at different speeds? My cable connection is 200Mbs, but my router is 100Mbs. I want to connect my desktop computer at 200Mbs (via 1Gbs connection) and my modem at 100Mbs on another port. I tried a switch (different brand), but it would only connect at a single speed (100Mbs or 1000Mbs). My modem would not connect when the computer connected at 1000Mbs and my computer connected at 100Mbs when the router was connected first.

I'm not sure I fully understand your question, but when it comes to Ethernet the speeds are pretty much automatic. Ethernet connections are generally backwards-compatible, so you should be able to plug all your devices into this. But you can't really choose to operate Port X at one speed and Port Y at another. The Ethernet protocol handles all that automatically.

Since this Switch is capable of Gigabit speeds, your desktop will be able to communicate with it at 1 Gbps. But if your router is only capable of 10/100 speeds, it will be limited to 1 Mbps. So if your desktop is communicating with another device on the network via this switch that's also capable of Gigabit speeds, then the connection between those two devices will operate at (or near) that speed. But if your desktop is communicating with your router via this switch, the speeds will be limited to 100 Mbps, not by the switch, but by the router.

In any case, though, you'll still need to use a router in your system. I don't think you can create a network with just your cable modem and this switch, since a switch cannot create its own network addresses (DNS protocol). So, you cannot plug your modem into this Switch and then your router on one port and your desktop on another, in an attempt to tap the cable connection's 200 Mbps rate. The router has to come first in the chain so it can create the proper network addressing needed.

My suggestion is to just use your router. Plug the cable modem into the correct port on the router (it's usually labeled WAN, or it'll be the one port that's separated from the others) and just plug your desktop computer into that. Your computer's connection to the internet will be limited to 100 Mbps (thanks to your router), but that's still quite a bit of speed.

Or, if the speed is still an issue for you, upgrade your router before you invest in other hardware. The router's 100 Mbps limitation will always be an issue for you since you always have to use the router somewhere.

Are the power and data LED's on the front as reflected in the images?  This is an important feature for me to purchase.

The LEDs are on a inclined surface, but the holes are drilled vertically, so it is better seen from the top or perpendicularly to that inclined surface. You can still see the luminosity of LED ON from the front, but not the LEDs directly.

I'm using it for high definition 1520p IP security cameras in commercial buildings.  Each IP camera requires about 10 Mbps to send digital motion images to the server, so I can install up to 100 cameras on a single Cat5e cable to my single 1 Gbps Ethernet port on the server.
