Question 1

Hello I have been wondering about the range of this product.  If someone could give me a rough estimate it would be much appreciated.  Also is the connection fairly stable?  And finally is the speed consistent?

Range is at least 35+ through walls of a single story house.  Drops a bar at this range but still speed still measures max that my cable provider provides (about 60mb) on an ipad air 2--also the same speed I'm measuring on a wired pc connection.

Connection is very stable so far (about 2 months).  I have not had to touch it since initial configuration.

Speed very consistent.  Although signal strength drops a little with range I still measure the max that my cable provider provides throughout the house.

I also have 2 tp-link switches on my wired net and have been very happy with all.

Does this work with a cable modem?

I use a Docsis 3 cable modem, and it is plugged in to this. Works great.

Question 3

Can this be used on AC power supply?  If so, on what input power supply, 110 V or 220V?

Yes, it comes with an AC power adapter. I cannot check the voltage though because the adapter died on me after a few months use. It is either 110v or both. The router though works great.

Question 4

Does it handle the full wired speed from a 100mbit WAN connection of my cable modem?

My current router Netgear SRXN3205 caps at around 60mbit (while plugging in cable modem directly to a PC gets 100mbit download speed)

Hi Michael,

The router is capable of running that speed from the WAN side to your computer. I would recommend wiring the system. With wireless there is a latency and other mitigating factors. Distance from the wireless and packet loss on the wireless. Also not all wireless cards handle 100 mbps. I have a laptop that only handles 54 mbps on the wireless but has a 10/100/1000 ethernet port. Giving much more speed. Also your processor and the function you're attempting could be the issue. If you stream movies, that only requires about 7 mbps download. Your processor and graphics card may be the bottleneck of that. Using 100 mbps constantly is going to be a heavy burden on any CPU, and wireless, and network for that matter. Hope this helps.

I'm looking for a cheap, simple way to have NAS-like storage.

Has anyone used the on board USB3 port for remote storage? Is it really USB3 fast, and does the WIFI connection drop out while transferring files?

I am using the Archer C8 in my home. I have an external hard drive connected to the USB 3.0 port. It is used as a data backup and as a media server. It can serve multiple workstations playing DVD ISOs. Those workstations are ofter wireless laptops, so it is safe to say that the wireless is not significantly slowed by intensive USB 3.0 port activity.

What is the range for this router? Looking to use it in a space about 2000sq I want to make sure I will have a good signal throughout.

Hi this is being used in a 3200 sqf house it has 3 bars to the street which is about 300 ft from the unit!

As this is a fairly new model, does anyone know if there is any third-party firmware (DD-WRT, Tomato) available for it yet?

It appears to have Broadcom chips in it.

You may be able to run DD-WRT on this router. When searching for third-party firmware, you should be able to see if it's compatible with the Archer C8. Keep in mind that loading it will void your warranty.

Would you recommend this router or the asus rt-n66u?

I did a lot of research and found the Asus brand of routers had a common theme of dropping connections.  The reviews I found for the Archer C8 were all good so I bought one.  I found the software to be very easy to work with and the router has performed flawlessly.  At this point I would highly recommend the Archer C8 router.

Will it run on 220V power?

I comes with a 120vac to 12vdc power supply you would have to get an adapter or a separate 220vac supply

Sorry, Bob. I don't have an answer to your question. I don't have/need EXT3. I use a 2TB portable HD at the USB 3.0 for Windows compatible devices.
