It doesn't seem to have a DVD drive. Do you need an external DVD drive to install software? Thanks.

Does not have a DVD drive (part of what makes it so light and handy).  Most of the software I installed (including Office) was done online and with no disc.  I did share a DVD drive from another machine on my network for one installation.  If you are going to buy an external DVD, I highly recommend also getting Lenovo OneLink to have plenty of available USB ports.

Question 2

The description states that it has an HDMI port? This doesn't seem correct. Could someone confirm if it is HDMI, DVI, or micro-DVI?

I just purchased one of these, and it definitely has an HDMI port. I suspect the intention is to download movies to your computer, and then watch on a HiDef TV.

You can see detailed images on the Lenovo site, and one of the views is of the right hand side showing the port.

can the memory be easily increased?

It comes with a 4gb stick, you can add one more 4gb stick to bring it to a total of 8gb. That's max the system will support. And yes , adding memory is pretty simple.

Question 4

Does this laptop have the traditional keys on the keyboard? May children's laptops have the island keys, and that's what I'm hoping to avoid.

This laptop does indeed have keys that can be described as an island. I'm not sure if Lenovo produces a laptop without that style.

The product description/specs note the OS is Windows 7 Professional. The product image shows a Windows 8 Start screen. Which is installed?

Win7 installed, but the cd came with the machine are win8 pro. You  Can upgrade to win8 freely.

Is this the E431 or the S431.  I had thought the Edge models were "E"?

20AX0001US is the ThinkPad S431. Though I've noticed many different suppliers have it described as ThinkPad EDGE S431.

How many and what versions of USB ports does this have? It's not listed.

Accepted Answer

Two USB  ports, one on either side.  Not positive, but believe one is 2.0 and one 3.0.  Highly recommend adding Lenovo ThinkPad OneLink Dock that connects at special power port and adds four USB ports that I had to purchase elsewhere.
