Question 1

Does the laptop come with restore disks or win 8 disk? I'd like to dump and reload a fresh copy of 8 without all the lenovo crapware. Thanks!

Hello James F,

To answer your question no it does not come with restore discs. No laptops come with them anymore because there is a recovery partition that is normally usable unless in the case of hard disk failure. It is accessible by holding shift and restarting the PC, once the restart option has been clicked you can release shift.

It however, comes with software preloaded that you can use to set up recovery media as well.

This laptop in particular has a lot of bloatware, however it is all removable, you could then set up your own recovery media. Also keep in mind that you will need an external (USB) DVD drive since the computer does not have one (as the ultrabay has your second GPU in it).

Does this computer have a cd rom drive?

No, Steam sells VERY cheap games, and these days most of the games are now DLC (Downloadable Content) which means you can get full SC2, Expansion, etc. just by merely downloading it. And if necessary, USB drives are more capable and have more storage capacity than dvd/cd-rom drives anyway. Biggest loss is if you were trying to use it to play blu-ray/1080p type movies on it and hooking it up to a big tv or something.

How to enable the 2nd gpu when  I get my laptop? And is 8 gb ram enough for gaming?

There's no evidence that anything over 6GB of RAM provides a boost for gaming. If you want to leave seven heavy-footprint applications running while you game then that might be another story. I can't answer for the second GPU running automatically "when you get it" since I wiped my machine and reinstalled Windows 8.1 to get rid of all the bloatware, but it should be as simple as selecting the option to use SLI in the Nvidia Control Panel. Be aware that some of the newer nvidia drivers had lots of issues for me with this notebook - I ended up dropping back to Windows 7 and now everything runs smoothly.

Is the screen a glossy screen or is it the matte screen????

To be honest, it feels like a glossy screen when compared and it definitely does NOT have the glare that full gloss screens have. But it doesn't look or feel matte to me.

Your question is ambiguous, so I will answer all possible variations I can think of.

1.) It does not have an optical DISK drive (So no DVD or Blu-Ray). In addition, the Ultra-bay where you would normally put one has the second 750M video card in it, so you have to swap that one out to put in a DVD or Blu-Ray drive. I would recommend a portable USB DVD drive you can plug in only when you need it instead of purchasing the Ultra-bay version.

2.) It does have a hard DISK drive. The hard disk drive is a 1TB old-school spinning disk style drive that also has an 8GB new-school style SSD built into it (So it is a Hybrid drive). Because the 1TB drive is 5400rpm expect pretty average performance in spite of the built in 8GB SSD. I would say overall performance is similar to a non-hybrid 7200rpm drive, which is still pretty good for a 1TB drive. Personally though, I swapped in an SSD drive, and this thing screams on boot and shutdown. I can do a full reboot in under 30 seconds, which is less time than it takes just to boot or shutdown alone with the default hard drive.

This has an ultrabay. From what I understand this means that you have several options on what to put in this ultrabay:
1. An extra disc drive (BluRay, DVD, whatever)
2. An extra fan
3. An extra GPU (this is what I have)

Additionally, you also can purchase a USB disc drive.

So I'm looking at replacement laptop's just in case the repairs for my old Dell XPS 15 are too expensive. I've become paranoid about overheating since that's what caused my Dell to break, so I'm just wondering how hot does this laptop get when gaming. The games I usually play are DayZ and an old Star Wars game. Will it overheat when gaming?

If used properly, No notebook should overheat. The fans on this unit are exceptional. Do not use a notebook on your lap or fabric / plush surfaces. There is an option to purge the fans from a Lenovo app and that should be done once a month or so. If used correctly, This notebook can handle hours of intensive gaming at a time. The games you listed require very little power to run,  so you should be fine. This is also overpowered for what you want to run. But having the overhead is nice if you choose to play some more power hungry games in the future. Hope that helps.

Where is the 8GB Hybrid SSHD located in Windows? How do I use it? The only "drive" that I can see is the hard-drive showing in My Computer.

It isn't a seperate drive or even a formatted partition. It's just a cache more or less.  Just used to help speed up an otherwise slow hdd. Makes a big difference though. Its designed to store information that is accessed regularly, thus increasing performance overall. Hope that helps.

Can the graphics cards be replaced on this computer, or are they integrated? Also, are the keys "mushy?" Would it be something that a person with small hands could use easily?

The keys are solid and easy to type on. Unfortunately, the track pad is a bit too sensitive for my touch typing tastes. It activates Win 8's metro functions too often and frequently moves the cursor to random locations when I try to touch type. I have large, meaty hands and fingers so small hands might not experience these nitpicks as often if at all. Since I use the laptop for gaming, I use an a Razer Black Widow keyboard and Naga mouse instead of the built in keyboard and trackpad.

BTW, since the laptop is mostly plugged in, I activated the keyboard's backlight (FNC + spacebar) all the time. The power button is not recessed enough. It's always a safari hunt to find it.

Question 10

Deciding between this laptop and the Asus N56 JR. This one has 2 750m gpu's but the Asus has only one 760m gpu. Which one would be better? Both are same price.

Speaking specifically about the GPUs ignoring other hardware (which can impact these metrics) in general the two 750M's in SLI will outperform the single 760M. If the two 750M's were a 9 then the single 760M would be a 7 by comparison (on a scale of 1-10). This however is heavily dependent on SLI profiles which come from Nvidia for the games you might be playing. So until the SLI profiles are optimized your mileage may vary for any SLI game. This is simply because you have two cards working together and something needs to tell it the best way to do this for each specific game. In my experience however these are updated fairly quickly. Another consideration is that in order to run games with SLI you need to play them fullscreen SLI does not work well if at all in windowed mode for most games. Finally the extra graphics card in this model replaces the DVD drive so take that into consideration you will not get a DVD drive unless you buy one as an accessory. I hope this helps.
