I bought as a Christmas present and have not played with it yet however my research shows the original Surface to run Windows RT and a "Pro" model was not available. In the Surface 2 it also runs Windows RT with this model running Windows 8 upgradable to 8.1. This is much better because it will run other windows programs such as Office 2010. Also, the Pro 2 uses the Intel i5 processor where lessor models do not.
At this price point this is hard to pass up. I opened mine just to give it a once over, it looks brand new, now scratch's at all. I will have to wait until Christmas no to see if it turns on or not.

does it come in the original box with the manuel etc.?

When I got mine it came in a special Microsoft Refurbished box. It looks just like the normal box but has refurbished printed on it. I was actually pleasantly surprised to find everything wrapped in cellophane. However it is refurbished so the a/c adapter looked slightly used. It was very neatly packaged and might have thought it was brand new if it wasnt labelled as being a refurbished unit. I've used it almost non stop and I'm very satisfied with the purchase. Yes, it includes the stylus, which is very useful due to the screen size.  It also includes the power supply.  You are also entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro from Microsoft (accessed through the Microsoft Store "app.")

Hi, I was just wanting to know the overall condition of this refurbished MS Surface Pro tablet and specifically the condition of the screen? I am looking into purchasing a Windows 8 tablet.

The one I received looked brand new and the screen was in perfect condition. As usual, when buying a refurb learn about the seller and the warranty and if it's sold and shipped by Newegg and Microsoft provides a 1 year warranty it is very likely that you'll be happy with the purchase.

The RT can only download apps from the Windows App Store.  The pro is essentially a full windows PC in a tablet form factor.  It can run both windows store apps as well as any Windows 8 compatible windows application, which is most things you can buy today.  My son runs Minecraft on it, and I have a friend that runs Guild Wars 2 on it.  Also, with BlueStacks android simulator, you can run android apps on it.

Yes, it comes with packaging. It is all in a genuine box, and it comes with all manuals and accessories that it normally would come with (pen, etc). The Surface itself has a little sticker that says "refurbished" on the back of the system, and the box has a label that says "refurbished", as well.

Is the Windows on this tablet activated? I purchased a similar unit  somewhere else and had a problem with activating Windows. I don't want to have to purchase a separate key.

Yes. Windows 8 Pro may be activated, but you must make sure the tablet is first set to the correct date and time.  Initially, I kept receiving an error code when I tried to activate Windows and had the same fear.  When I checked the Microsoft web site for this error code, it explained the problem activating Windows was likely an improper date/time setting.  As soon as I corrected the date and time settings, Windows activated properly.  You can then upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro free by going to the "Store" app on the Windows start screen, BUT you must first let Windows install all updates to 8.0 Pro before you can upgrade.

The Surface Pro runs a full version of Windows 8 (as shipped.)  You can get apps from the Windows Store, and can can load & run any other Windows 8 software.
The Surface RT runs Windows RT, and you can only get apps from the Windows Store: it's not compatible with other Windows software.

What is the OS and is this a S2 or S3?

The OS is Windows 8 which was easily upgraded for free to Windows 8.1.  I'm not sure if it is a home or pro version.  This is a Surface Pro 1 - it came out before the Surface Pro 2 and its biggest weakness is battery life.  If you get the Microsoft Surface Power Type keyboard it doubles the battery life. Also you can get a 64gb slim (so it doesn't stick out) usb stick for cheap to double the hard disk space.
