Question 1

What all is included with the kit? I cant find any place that's says if I need to order RAM, or CRU etc. as some kits include it and others do not.

As other's have mentioned.  You'll need memory and an mSATA drive.  Wireless is up to you, the antenna are there if you need them.

Make sure you get the correct power cord.  It IS the C5 or "mickey mouse" or clover leaf style cord.  It is NOT the C13 that you typically on computer equipment.  If your not sure, check wikipedia for IEC_60320 for pictures of the different types of power cords.  (Thanks newegg for blocking useful links!)

Search newegg for "C5 power cord".  They carry multiple lengths from multiple manufacturers, all of which will work.

Question 2

In intend to purchase the "Intel 7260HMW IEEE 802.11AC, dual-band, 2x2 Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth 4.0 Mini PCI Express combo Adapter - 867 Mbps+300Mbps - Internal - OEM" for wireless and Bluetooth connectivity.  Will I need an antenna to support the connectivity?

Hi Rob,

It depends a lot on where you plan on placing the unit in relation to your router as well as what kind of interference there is. Will it be in the same room as your router? You'll probably be fine unless it's pretty far away (across the house) or if you have a lot of interference (cordless phones for example).

These units ship without a power cord.  Where do you get a power cord?

Does it need extra cooler for server purposes? I wont be shut down for several months, non-stop.

Hello!

We have built quite a few of these (we sell complete systems at CastleOS) and the answer is no, it does not need an extra cooler. However, that does not mean it won't take measures to ensure it won't over heat - it will - by slowing down. So the question you need to ask is whether you'll be running at 100%, or near 100%, all the time. If it's simply a server that will be running 24/7 but only occasionally under load, you'd be good to go.

Does this system come with an Os loaded?

No these don't come with an OS or storage integrated.  You can install an mSata mini pci adapter or use USB attached flash for your OS.  Yu would need to install your own OS or hypervisor on the system.

can i hook mouse keyboard & montior to it?

Yes, absolutely!

The keyboard & mouse must be USB -- I used a wireless kbd & mouse that include a single USB cable to the 'antenna'. That leaves additional USB ports free for things like a printer, USB thumb drives or an external USB optical drive.

The monitor can be HDMI or DisplayPort. It can even be 1 HDMI and 2 DisplayPort for a 3-monitor setup!

Can it be mounted behind a monitor?

Yes, there is a mounting plate that can be used for that and other areas. Depending on size of monitor mounting area, may need additional hardware.

Is there a recommended 8 gb DDR3 kit for this unit?

The Intel website usually provides a compatibility list for peripherals including memory for the NUC. I purchased the Patriot Signature 16GB (2x8 GB) 204 pin DDR3 SO-DIMM 1333 (PC3 10600) Laptop Memory Model PSD316G1333SK for the NUC from Newegg for about $115. It has the correct footprint for the slots in the NUC and they worked for me perfectly. I required the memory for Windows 8.1. The application of the NUC is as a streaming device for a big screen TV.

Would this system make a good HTPC and media extender for the SiliconDust HDHomeRun PRIME?

I have been using this as my HTPC for a year now... it is silent and works great for both streaming and viewing my own collection of movies!  I also went for the solid state HD which makes a world of a difference in start up and accessing data.

NO problems installing... NO problems with the setup... and it stays on all day.  Great little device.

Question 10

Will the DDR3L work on these? I also want RAM that runs cool, regardless, so with the mild cooling here, would you say it would better to avoid any RAM that is too performance orientated, such as the ones with the lowest Cas Latency? I know I absolutely need a 1.35V, and 1600 makes more sense than 1333 to me. Maybe if I got a Silverstone case with heat fins it would enable a little more performance. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a great idea however, although fans are prone to failure, my research has shown that the NUC's built-in fan does well, in fact better than the passive cooling provided by the Silverstone's case. Memory sticks with Cas Latency 9 or 11 are best suited for NUC. If you are going to go low, stick with "9." I have been using 8GB x 2 sticks from Kingston for the past couple of years and they have performed great especially seeing that I using Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver on a regular basis.
