RE. question on "refresh rate": "1080p" refers to quality of picture (resolution), right? (I.E. 1080 better pic. than 780?)  Doesn't "refresh rate" refer to something about pic. quality when one is changing channels?

Refresh rate is how often the TV shows a new image.  Our electricity runs at 60Hz in the USA, so that is the standard. Anything above that is done really through invention and technology built into the TV itself as they have evolved.  LCD has always had a problem with 'motion blur' because the panel cannot change from light to dark quickly enough for some scenes.  It doesn't bother some people as much as others, as it really is related to the viewer and the way their brain interprets the video.  Think of it like like 60 single images are all shown one after another until they fill up a second of time, hence 60fps (frames per second) which is the standard in 1080i recordings.  Manufacturers compensate for LCD's inherent design flaw by using a processor to essentially insert a fake image between the real frame, or insert black in between each frame so your brain does not see any 'blur' because it is happening so fast.  The difference between 60Hz and 120Hz is actually quite noticeable. Above 120Hz, it gets a little harder to tell, at least to me.  I notice it mostly in football or sports with fast motion and some action scenes in movies.  I would suggest before you purchase online, go to your local retailer and ask to see some fast motion objects on their sets in-house and decide what looks best to you.  I have both LCD and plasma, I still think my plasma has a better picture.
