This is a misnomer, as it is not an internal hard drive.
2.5" is for internal SSD drives and refers to the width of the drive.
The Samsung T5 is an External SSD, and its dimensions are 2.25" wide by 3" long by about 3/8" thick.

can the T5 be used to do automatic backups of your data....such as time machine or auto backup on a PC?

. . . Yes, I have been using it for this purpose for the past year.  Besides the files folder created by Apple's Time Machine backup, you may manually create additional folders for supplementary storage from your main hard drive, linked by aliases from your desktop (e.g., if you download or create something you don't want taking up space on your computer's drive, store it directly on the Samsung T5 and access it with an alias as a shortcut).

En Based on Samsung's internal testing, compatibility may vary according to the system environment.
 The Samsung Portable SSD Softweare for password protection is working with below OSs:
 T5 works with
Windows OS : Windows 7 or higher

Mac OS : Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan and Sierra (versions 10.9 or higher)

Android OS : Android 4.4 (KitKat) or higherter an answer to this question.

Like any external USB drive it is only powered when in use. That said depending on your system and the apps running the drive might be accessed more than you think. The good part is that there is no start up time involved.

I don't know for certain, but I can't image why it would not.  Mac's use the same storage devices that PCs do, just a different format.  You'll need either a USB- B and USB type-C to connect.

No - Only USB 3.1 - And you cannot adapt Thunderbolt to USB.

I think you have to reinstall the games with this SSD drive as the destination drive.
