Would this be a good drive to connect to the USB port of a Smart TV for playing movies?

In terms of its capacity and speed capability, yes ... but it will largely depend on your TV's USB port speed. If it, too, is USB 3.0 or 3.1 rated, you should do fine. If it's only 2.0, then a lot will depend on your frame rates and refresh performance. Otherwise, the My Passport SSD should not hold you back in the least.

I plan to upgrade my laptop soon, but am using USB 2.0 now. For backup and restore on Win7 my Seagate FreeAgent Go is miserably slow. Would this external SSD speed up that process? Thanks.

Yes, I think it would, but if you want to really go, you may want to upgrade your 2.0 slot to a 3.0.

is it good for gaming, or running games off of it?

You really don't want to run games off an external drive. Take the time and go read up some info on how to build computers. Sounds like you'll save a lot of time and money
