Heat Issues! 01/26/2013
This review is from: ZOTAC AMP! GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Video Card ZT-50402-10L
Pros:
Great price especially for when I bought it.
Cons:
I have owned this card for 18 months but suddenly the card started experiencing over heating issues. Initially I thought it was poor airflow in my case, so I blew the dust out of my fans and chassis hoping that it would resolve the relatively high idle temp (50-60 C).
Over the course of the following month, I noticed my temps steadily climbing into the 70s when playing various games (namely Total War Shogun 2).
Then suddenly launching any application that utilizes the GPU shoots the temperature into the 90s. At which point I immediately end the application to save the graphics card.
I suspect the thermal paste between the GPU and heatsink to be bad but instead of reapplying it myself, I decided to contact Zotac about the issue first (so not to void any warranty I might have). The initial ticket was quickly resolved by pointing me to an RMA request (took one business day) however Zotac has not followed up with the RMA in two weeks and it still states "Pending".
18 months is a very short lifespan for a graphics card, I would suspect their products to be better designed (and I see that this is a reoccurring issue with other people on the Zotac forums.)
If Zotac resolves my issue, I will be sure to change my review to reflect that. I understand hardware fails, it's how the company treats their customers in those situations that can save their reputation.
Overall Review:
Although the price was very affordable, I don't think I would purchase from Zotac again at this point in time.
Manufacturer Response:
Hello,
Please email lee@zotacusa.com with your RMA details and I will gladly look into it for you.
Thanks
