There 1/2 the time

Comments: Don't have the box since it works fine as long as its not cold booted. Should have stuck with LSI. <sigh>

No Windows 7 64bit Support...

Pros: ...the packaging was nice.

Cons: The driver from the website and from the disc will crash your windows 7 64bit OS.
It will require a windows startup recovery...each time you install ANY driver.

Silly me I didn't know I needed to update the firmware. Whoops.

The firmware is too old to work with win7 64 bit.
The firmware can only be updated from DOS (evil).

This part took about 6 hours to do as I had a very hard time getting my machine to boot into a DOS shell that would work with the firmware update application from adaptec.
Eventually I did get it flashed however.

Then I installed the drivers and...CRASH.
I have a live backup of my OS on another HDD.
Installed drivers on it and it worked!
I could read and write to the HDD! Yay!

So I reimaged my current HDD and installed the drivers.
No crash! Yay again!
Then I tried to format the drive with Killdisk...CRASH!
Windows restarted...tried again...CRASH!

Then I swore...a LOT.
After 12 hours of troubleshooting on your day(s) off wouldn't you?

Overall Review: I've never had to return a product to newegg before.
I knew I eventually would have to...
I thought adaptec was supposed to be a good brand.
I don't know what card to get now.
The only other good ones I know of are Areca and Tyan and they are exorbitantly priced.
I mainly just wanted the card for JBOD so I could install more HDDs.
*facepalm*

Living on Past Reputation

Pros: The 1430SA replaces the great 1420SA at the $100.00 price point for those have the newer PCIe 2 motherboard connectors. I expect the 1430SA will be the same workman like SATA RAID controller. That's the best I can say at this point.

Cons: After owning this controller for 3 days, I have been unable to get it installed into a Windows 2008 R2 server. I have done these kind of installations many ten's of times. After researching the problem, I find out it has been documented (over a year) to be a problem installing this controller into Windows 64-bit OS's. No work around has been given either by Adaptec or Microsoft.

BTW, this problem is for both server & desktop 64-bit OS's depending on the type of distribution DVD...so BEWARE!

Overall Review: Frankly, I could care less if this is an Adaptec problem or a Microsoft problem it needs to be addressed.

I am a big fan of both Adaptec & Microsoft; and have voted with my wallet. But this has taught me to not buy on past reputation. I will be a more informed buyer in the future.

I will give this another day or so looking for a solution on the NET (stubborn & hate to return stuff). Then I'll see if Newegg will give me an RMA. I have bought many, many products from Newegg and their service has been absolutely stellar; even with a couple of returns. Great, Great JOB NEWEGG!

Solid card for linux

Pros: * Small / fits low-profile and normal slots
* All connectors forward facing
* No drivers to install in linux - builtin support (ubuntu server 10.04)

Cons: * If you have SATA cables with locks, it works but it is tight.
* Drive detection on boot is slow, but I use it for a server so I don't care.

Overall Review: PCIE slots are backwards compatible; meaning you can put this card in an 8x, 16x or 32x slot without worry (though, obviously you will only get the 4x speed).

I am currently running them from my two spare 16x slots.

Good Inexpensive RAID Controller

Pros: Price, ease of setup

Cons: Instructions for driver install seem outdated, only 4 ports.

Overall Review: This card installed extremely easily, and included a low profile bracket which I needed. I'm using it in a low-profile Dell system with 2 Seagate Barracuda drives in a RAID 1 array. The only bad thing is the insistance that you need a floppy drive to install the driver. On Windows this is not the case, but I can't speak for Linux. All you need to do is go to adaptec.com, get the appropriate driver (a good idea in any case) and burn it to a CD or put it on a USB drive. There is no need to use the disk that came with the card. During Windows installation eject the OS DVD and put in the driver CD (or USB) at the appropriate time. Make sure you replace the OS DVD as soon as the drivers are loaded or you will get a cryptic error that windows cannot be installed on the selected device. If this happens to you, don't panic, simply place the OS DVD in the drive and click the refresh button on the screen, then proceed.

Ok but could be better

Pros: Easy to install. Comes with low profile bracket which will come in handy if you ever decide to move this to a 2U server chassis. Easy to setup and use.

Cons: Not much of a speed boost. I bought this because I have three virtualization servers in my test lab. The Dell with the PERC raid controller is running RAID 0 and is pretty fast while the HP with the Smart Array controller is even faster. I slapped this card in a white box with all Intel parts but the performance wasn't anything special. Set it up with a RAID 0 stripe using two 2TB drives. Did benchmarks on the drives using the mobo controllers and ran new benchmarks on the stripe after the controller was installed expecting a noticeable difference but I only saw a nominal improvement going from an average read of 102MB/s to 113MB/s. I was hoping for at least 150MB/s.

Overall Review: I guess it's true you get what you pay for. Should've choked up the money for the bigger better faster card. Now this thing will be laying in a bin somewhere for the next 5 years.

Pros: Good Linux support, onboard LEDs a nice touch, compact size, comes with mini pci bracket for those who require it.

Cons: BIOS loads quite slow, even when disabled it takes the time to search each channel for what I assume is the RAID's superblock.

Overall Review: I'm using it as JBOD to control part of an 8 drive RAID5 array using MDADM under Ubuntu. I wish I could get an 8 port version for this price.

When it works, it works well.

Pros: It gives you 4 additional Sata ports to use in RAID or as JBOD. I have it for JBOD, I have little use for a RAID. I get excellent data transfer rates, I can't see any difference between drives on the 1430 and my motherboard Sata ports.

Cons: Here I doc it a few points. I don't know if the problem is my Asus P5K Pro motherboard or the Adaptec 1430SA, but if the computer is rebooted, the system fails to initalize the card. I'm not talking about the OS, I'm talking about the BIOS load and drive detection. If I completely power off the system and then power it back on the card amazingly appears and my drives are available. I've searched everywhere for help online, but every discussion is centered around initializing a RAID setup, not the card itself.

Overall Review: I'm sure the card works fine, when I remember to power down and back up again, it works fine for me. But that is really irritating. Plus, if I restart too quickly after a shutdown, then the motherboard thinks it was a bad overclock and I have to take even more time to correct that problem. It's a bizaar incompatibility, but there aren't any settings in the Mobo bios that affects this.
