does this unit include cabling for the drives?

No it does not. I purchased this.

I got the iStarUSA ones first, but had 2 defective ones. I have 4 Samsung 850 EVO SSDs in RAID 0 and get about 2 GB/s on benchmarks. Scaling is very good.

Question 2

Can you use this without putting it in a RAID? Im looking for a device that would let me use all drives independently.

To my knowledge this controller is designed specifically to be a RAID controller, and it has worked well for that purpose, although it runs hot and we had to add a fan.

My computer geek son who installed it is not around so I cannot ask if he could set it up to control independent separate operating drives.

Question 3

We are updating from the 2405 model (2260100-R) to the 71605E model.  We used a cable and fan kit on the old model.  Do we need the same thing now?  (PNs would be greatly helpful.)

My system case has good fan cooling and I have had no heating problems with the 71605E since I installed it. No specific fan cooling for the card.
