general information

Highest Performance

Adaptec Series 6 RAID controllers deliver up to 60% higher sustained sequential throughput than previous generation Adaptec controllers and up to 2Gbps sustained data transfer rate to the host. At peak performance, Adaptec Series 6 RAID controllers offer 4.8 Gbps through the SAS 2.0 interface and 4.0 Gbps through the PCI Gen 2 host interface.

Advanced Data Protection

Adaptec RAID Code (ARC) delivers maximum reliability with RAID levels 0, 1, 1E, 5, 5EE, 6, 10, 50, 60 and JBOD. ARC also offers RAID Level Migration (the ability to easily migrate RAID levels), Online Capacity Expansion (expand capacity without powering down the server), and Copyback Hot Spare (when a failed drive has been replaced, data is automatically copied from the hot spare back to the restored drive).

Hybrid RAID

With Hybrid RAID 1 & 10, Adaptec Series 6 RAID controllers offer maximum performance and reliability by combining Solid State Drives (SSDs) and Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) in a single mirroring array. By performing read operations from the faster SSD and write operations on both the SSDs and HDDs the result is tremendous performance gains over standard HDD RAID arrays.

The Case for Cache

The fastest way for a RAID controller to fulfill a read or write request is to serve data out of its cache. Savvy network administrators know that enabling the RAID controller cache offers significant performance benefits, such as reduced latency in I/O requests, bandwidth and queue depths that surpass software application limits, and on-the-fly parity calculations on sequential writes.

Zero-Maintenance Cache Protection

RAID controllers typically employ battery backup units (BBUs) to protect cached data during power loss, but BBUs require constant monitoring and preserve data for a maximum of 72 hours during power loss. Adaptec Series 6 RAID controllers include Zero-Maintenance Cache Protection, a revolutionary advancement that solves BBU deficiencies by providing full protection to cached data with no installation, monitoring, maintenance, disposal, or replacement costs. ZMCP features 4GB of SLC based NAND flash memory with super capacitor technology (available as a separate Kit).

general information

Intelligent Power Management

Intelligent Power Management (IPM) slashes power and cooling costs by up to 70% using intelligent I/O caching combined with disk drive power savings via standby and power-off modes.

One-view Storage Management

Adaptec Series 6 RAID controllers operate under Adaptec Storage Manager, a one-view tool that centralizes management of all Adaptec RAID products.

Broad Operating System Support

Adaptec Series 6 RAID controllers support all major operating systems, including Windows, Linux, VMware and FreeBSD. Adaptec Series 6 RAID controllers have been extensively tested with third-party components to deliver the utmost in compatibility.

Update to prior review

Pros: The other poster recommended a 40mm fan which was spot on for the size required, so thanks to that person / poster.

The length of the screw for me was about 2x-3x longer than required, but I was able to cut the screw to shorten the length and get the fan closer to the sink.

Temps without the Fan would run 165 - 180F!!

Temps with 40mm fan is now: 120F - 145F if copying files.

Screw length was minor issue and the other poster truly saved many hours of headaches with their research!!!!

FINALLY, please keep your cover on your case when running this card WITHOUT a fan!!! The card temp can rise above 205F.

Also, I would keep this card higher up on the MB and not place it towards the bottom of the computer due to airflow and it can increase the temps of card even higher!

Cons: Why no fan included on the card when purchased I have NO IDEA!

Other Thoughts: Note: I did add a couple of Enermax 120mm fans to replace some older and louder Antec Stealth 120mm fans in my case.

Before adding / replacing the case fans, it probably added roughly 5F-8F to the temps I posted above on the physical card.

I also added a couple of 80mm fans to help with airflow in the case, BUT the biggest improvement was adding the fan directly to the heat sink.

Also, don't forget to purchase a 3-pin fan spiltter cable if you don't have an free spot to plug in the add-on fan!

Great Card, but NOT for SSD

Pros: Worked well with HD Velociraptor drives in RAID 0. No problems and worked well right out of the box.

Also, my motherboard was not listed (ASUS Rampage III Extreme), BUT the add-on card worked fine without any major headaches.

Cons: Did not perform as expected with SSD in Raid 0.

Make sure your hard drives are supported by the card.

Had better performance using standard SATA 2 ports on the motherboard with SSD Raid 0 using crucial m4 ssd drives.

Other Thoughts: if you need more standard ports for manual hard drives, don't hesitate to purchase, but if your thinking you need more 6GB ports for SSD, this card will not be able to give performance needed for SSD Raid

Great for mechanical hard drives

Pros: Assuming a proper cable is purchased, SATA III hard drives can connect at 6 Gbps.

Good compatibility with older motherboards. I used an Asus P5E x38 motherboard.

Using mechanical hard drives, this card outperforms competing cards in RAID 5.

Using a RAID card makes it possible to transport an array to a different machine with data intact, not likely with motherboard RAID.

512 MB cache supercharges smaller file transfers and assists in larger file copies. See other thoughts for benchmarks.

The card's onboard RAID chip performs the processing necessary for RAID, without stealing cycles from the CPU like cheaper cards or software RAID.

Cons: Boot time - With card installed, takes about 30 seconds longer until logon screen appears.

Does NOT come with cables. (Its cheaper to purchase the card and cables separately anyway.)

Requires additional cooling than the built-in heatsink. I used Vantec Spectrum Fan Card (Model SP-FC70-BL) which by default aims the flow of air perfectly at the card's heatsink.

Seems more optimized for mechanical hard drives than SSDs.

Required about 27 hours to initialize 6TB RAID5 array with three 3TB drives.

Other Thoughts: I purchased the card to create a RAID5 array on an older PC using three Seagate 3TB hard drives (STBD3000100). 64 Kb stripe size, used default allocation unit size in Windows.

Plugged the card into the 2nd PCI Express x16 slot.

Any reviewer should mention their motherboard and model(s) of hard drives and whether it all works together or not, as compatibility info is very valuable to know.

I purchased the StarTech SAS8087S450 SAS Cable which saved money over buying the "kit" that includes the card with a cable.

Warning: Western Digital drives are known to drop out of RAID arrays unless they are the WD Enterprise (RE4) series!

Benchmarks using CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 x64:

4000 MB file size

Sequential Read : 300.667 MB/s
Sequential Write : 297.637 MB/s

50 MB file size

Sequential Read : 1312.676 MB/s
Sequential Write : 1284.467 MB/s

Not a typo! Probably due to 512MB cache on the card.

If any questions, I'm at optimum.net

Adaptec. Adaptec never changes.

Pros: Adaptec's hardware is still of extremely high quality and their BIOS level array configuration is fantastic. Adaptec Storage Manager (their OS level utility) is Java-based and ugly, but it works without any fuss. SNMP and SMTP alerts are supported - but if you have a single system with an Adaptec controller, remember you will get alerts only as long as it is still running!

I look forward to using Adaptec's Hybrid RAID1; it is nice knowing that instead of ponying up for two $600 solid state drives, I can get one with a cheap magnetic disk drive and have redundancy without halving my read performance.

If you have case window, the card's LEDs will make you feel like David Hasselhoff in Night Rider. Only much, much nerdier.

Cons: If you're going to use this in a workstation, or really anything that isn't a 1U server, a fan is REQUIRED. You will NOT be able to get by without active cooling. See my Other Thoughts section for help with this.

The card does not default to outputting aggregate activity to the 2-pin HDD activity headers on the card; you need to configure the card to do this from its BIOS at which point it will behave like any other motherboard HDD activity header.

At this price point I would have liked to get a second SFF-8087 port so I could address an additional four disks without an SAS expander.

Other Thoughts: Yes, those are screw threads for a 40mm fan in the closeups of the heatsink! After much trial and error, I have confirmed them to be M2.5-0.45 machine screws. 8 or 10mm length pan-head screws should be sufficient depending on how recessed the screw holes are in your fan.

Don't expect a timely response from Adaptec support if your issue clearly isn't a critical issue - they took over a month to give me a partial answer to my request for screw size info.

I am currently using this card with 2x Fujitsu MBA3147RC drives in a RAID0 and 2x Seagate ST2000NM0001 drives in a RAID1. If you really want to use SATA drives with this controller do not, and I repeat, DO NOT buy an SATA drive that is not on Adaptec's hardware compatibility list! I initially took a chance with Caviar Blacks fully aware of this TLER nonsense and they definitely did not hold up to initial stability testing. Just about any SAS drive will probably be fine.
