Is this the old version with 4 AAA batteries or the new version with 2 batteries?

The unit I received takes two AAA cells installed head-to-tail. I use the keyboard a couple of times a month for short periods. Still on my first set of alkalines installed 8 months ago, but your mileage will vary.

Does the touch pad have a tap feature and can the tap feature be turned off?

Yes. The way you turn it off however is a setting in your operating system. Google how to turn it off.

Is this keyboard compatible for an Apple MacBook Pro vintage 2013 running El Capitan?

We are using this keyboard for presentation in the conference room, we connected to Apple and PC computer in the technical room on the back of the 60" screen TV and we connect the computer to it with HDMI.
