I bought this processor and I need to upgrade my motherboard so that my computer can use it, however im unsure of which kind of motherboard i need?

Anything that supports AM3+ socket type. Some boards (my Asus M4A89GTD-Pro USB3, for example) that are not listed as AM3+ compatible have had BIOS releases that make them compatible though.

Will this CPU work with the following old mobo?

ASUS M4A89TD PRO/USB3 AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX

My AMD Phenom III died recently....

Unfortunately a AM3+ Processor will not work on a AM3 board. AM3+ Processors have 942 connecting pins and a AM3 Processor has only 941 pins. So Unfortunately your motherboard is 1 pin hole short of being able to fit a AM3+ Processor.
