I have read that this card will work with less than a 500W supply. I have only a 300W supply. I don't think it will, but want to be sure before I pass on the card. Will it work?

It all depends upon the build quality of your power supply (Which I will refer to as a "PSU" from now on) and the amount of power the rest of your system takes. Certain OEM PSU's (delta, NMB) will be underrated for their wattage capacity by design, and cheap PSU's will not even be able to reach their rated capacity. Just because it's stamped on the box doesn't mean it's true is all. Some will have overhead, others will be drastically over-rated and not work

I've run these cards with quality (seasonic internals in most cases) 450watt PSU's just fine, but 300 would be cutting it close. You never want to fully load down a power supply, and the 7870 would probably drag around 155watts from the 12v rail alone. Power is Volts*Amps, so if you work that out, you're trying to drag 13 more amps out of the 12V section than you already are. So if the computer itself drags 150 watts under load you are already over label capacity.

I'd replace that PSU If you aren't stuck with a proprietary one before running that card though. Next time include as much information possible, make/model of the power supply would have helped me better answer your question.

Also if your power supply can handle it, which I can't say sadly but my answer is "No" for now, I highly doubt it has 2 6 pin 12v power connectors, so you'd have to use a couple of 4 pin molex->6 pin power adapters even to be able to provide the physical connections.
