However, no, Threadripper is built on DDR4 architecture which is different from DDR3 so, I don't believe there is a mobo out there that supports both DDR 3 and the processor you're looking at.

Negative. Tr4 socket incompatible with Am4. 3900x, 3950x and possibly ryzen 4000 will work or you can backtrack to 2700

Can someone give me some reasons why 12 cores are needed for my gaming computer?

Graphics cards give you pretty pictures, your CPU does everything else. Interfacing, most physics, game logic, loading to and from the PCI buses and SATA (but you can go PCI storage because you have the bus count and bandwidth). 
Pretty much everything that is not drawing or tessellation is CPU driven. (probably an overstatement, but close enough for practice)

Beside that, "need" is a strange way to put it. You don't usually build a gaming comouter out if need. You are doing it for the experience. 12 cores doesn't hurt, probably not a huge benefit over 8, but also, why not?

Where can you buy a fan/cooler for this processor?

As best I can tell, after sifting through all sorts of forums/videos--According to this video from JayzTwoCents, called "My thoughts on AMD Threadripper", (around 10:25), he mentions Asetek shipping mounting brackets along with these CPUs. So if you have an Asetek-based cooler, you "should" be able to mount/use it on day one. How do you find out who made your cooler? Great question! There is also a video by Gamers Nexus called "Who Actually Makes Your Liquid Coolers?", that should help you with that, the chart is linked in the video discription, & is pretty straight-forward. Do I know this is guaranteed? Not at all, but it's the best I could put together. Oh, and at the end of Jayz's video, he does make mention of a few air cooling manufacturers that "should" be compatible now, or are making something compatible--Not sure, since I'm not interested in air cooling something with this many cores. Best Motherboard and fan for this CPU?

It’s really user preference. No one board compatible with Threadripper cpus are really better than the next. I personally went with Aorus X399, but really it comes dowm to your personal taste. As far as as cooling goes, I’d personally go with water cooling if you can fork over the extra cash. There are plenty of options for that now that it’s been out for awhile. Ive been using a cooler master master liquid lite 240 which is relatively inexpesove and kept my 1920X nice and cool.

Can I use this CPU with VmWare ESXi and virtual software?  Id like to build a beefy host without spending Intel server CPU money.

Will this work with ASRock x399 Taichi?
On the AsRock website their supported CPU have a slightly different part number listed as: TR 1920X (YD192XA8UC9AE)

It will work.  Any TR4 socket CPU will fit on that motherboard, which includes all the current Threadripper CPU's.

The prices I'm sure has dropped with the 2nd gen of threadripper on the horizon but not sure on how much it is now . Not sure what the suggested retail price is now.
