Do you have to have wifi where the outdoor camera will be mounted?

Yes.

I've had these cameras for a couple months. All three are outside - one a little further away from the home base, which is inside. I have two cameras in the rear outside and one out front; each stays consistently connected but does show that the connection strength is low.

How long do batteries last?

Hello, I've ordered the arlo security system with 3 cameras. They have been installed and running since December 1st 2018 and the batteries were at 100%. Today is January 4th 2019, my cameras are motion activated everyday because of the installation locations. But today my batteries are at 57% 57% and 60%. So far one month has pass and thats where my batteries are currently. Hope this helps you out if you are deciding on purchasing this security system. Well worth the money...

Do these cameras really need the base?  Can we use the existed home wireless network to connect to cameras?

They do need the base. The base is connected to your wireless network and the cameras can only register to the base.
