Battery live is totally dependent on how busy the view is where you place the camera.  If there's not much activity, you could get up to 3 months.  If it's highly active, you might get only 3 weeks.  You can also program the cameras to be less sensitive.

Max resolution - 720p (specs) or 1080p (hype)?

barely above 720; is like 900p on high quality video then compression kills it and doesnt make it any better

What is the difference between this circular base station and the oblong base station?

Compatibility with the other arlo devices.  I found out that this round base station does not support the video doorbell.  Check the compatibility of the base stations to ensure they support what you plan on implementing.
