Yes, the back-light is not able to be changed color wise but you can turn down the brightness or turn it up.

is this an adequate machine for playing games like GTA or other high intensity games?

I do not have GTA 5 on my steam but I can tell you a majority of my games that run at 60 FPS at Very High or Ultra Settings in 1080P.
Outlast: Whistle Blower DLC (62 FPS on average) 
DOOM 2016 (honestly a mixed bag, can go from 100+ fps to 49 fps if things get heavy)
Skyrim Special Edition on Highest settings possible is 60 fps just wandering around, don't know about combat though I rarely play it.
The Forest ( barely 60 fps without Low Memory Mode on, with it on you get 60-70 fps)
COD:Infinite Warfare (60 FPS the entire match I played, dips in menu though)
COD: MW Remastered MP ( jumps from 70 fps to 50 so meh)
CS:GO (150-200+ FPS)
Resident Evil 7 (80-90 FPS)
So I can assume GTA 5 would run fine with this laptop, maybe not the highest settings but it'll run it at 60 fps on a mix of High and Medium settings I can imagine. Sorry for the late answer, I went and played all of these games on the laptop to make sure my answer was accurate.

I'm looking for a dual purpose lap top for my son who is starting college in the next couple of weeks.  He is majoring in Engineering and is a gamer.  Is this a good choice for him considering  performance, size, weight and battery life?  Thanks!

I got one several months back and I love it. I am able to play every game I've thrown at it so far on high or ultra settings.

Performance wise, it's awesome for the price, I also do a lot of video editing on it.

Its average size for Laptop and not any more heavy than any other laptop I've owned, the battery life I'm not as impressed with, but if you play with the battery settings and turn non essentials down it isn't bad. I get about three hours of casual usage unless I'm gaming and then I get about one.

Yes I still like this laptop. One of the problems I have had with it though is the screen dim key. Pressing the 'fn' button and then a certain function key can dim or brighten the screen, however, it doesn't seem to work. Even going into the windows settings and trying to change it from there doesn't change the brightness of the screen. I haven't looked this problem up but it seems to be small and would have a simple fix. No reason to not buy this laptop, as it is a great deal.
