Overall Review: just thought i add another 2 cents. that may help
works fantastic with a Intel Xeon W3550 Bloomfield 3.06GHz even works better overclocked to 3.20ghz seriously 2 years strait flawless can overclock higher but i looking for a stable server over speed
does not work so good and runs extremely hot! with Intel Xeon W3680 Westmere-EP 3.33GHz, runs flaky not stable enough to run for even a week before it froze up and a few reboots in between, disappointing
i tried many memory brands from gskill to crucial and corsair just cause i already had them and kingston INTEL CERTIFIED ECC memory seems most stable and believe to make it all around fastest

Pros: Linux 2.6.28 up and running as-is. Fan and temp support via bleeding-edge lm-sensors. No driver issues. 12G, a 920 with eight virtual cores, this is the no-brainer Linux workstation combo to buy this year.
Cons: "Legacy USB Support" must be turned off as recent Linux refuses to boot with it on or you need to boot with iommu=off [The linux IOMMU/DMAR engine reports a memory range setup error in the BIOS and halts the boot with an error. Perhaps we'll see a firmware fix]. Earlier kernels (eg, 2.6.17) don't seem to care because they didn't go looking for the problem.
LGA1366 seems easy to mis-seat without any way to tell. I had a mystery 'bad' DIMM slot and weird driver errors the first boot; it was all due to a mis-seated CPU that looked perfect. Been gold since reinserting it. Can't blame that on ASUS.
Overall Review: Just for fun, I briefly played with the overclock and had it running Linux rather nicely at DDR3-1666 and 3.2GHz with both the Zalman and the BIOS set to 'silent mode' without a hiccup but decided I wanted reliable/quiet way more than speed. It delivers on either side!
Will NEVER buy another Asus product8/10/2011 10:10:47 AM
Pros: Board has all the features I required.
Cons: Asus technical support is ATROCIOUS!
The board I got was DOA.
Sent it in for an RMA.
They "fixed" it and sent it back. Still DOA.
Sent it back for REPLACEMENT.
Due to THEIR bungling it entered the regular RMA channel again.
Rather than just fix it IN-HOUSE, they're going to send it back to me AGAIN and make me send it back through the proper channels.
A system that was supposed to be put together 2 MONTHS ago is now going to linger for at least another 3-5 weeks waiting on these jokers.
I had a manager talk to me twice.
Each time he gave me his "direct extension".
Yet when called, that extension rings through to voicemail on a service that reports that that particular extension is NOT set up for VM services, which then kicks you to the general support queue.
This manager, the second time, tried to assure me that I hadn't called HIS extension or that I'd misheard it (never mind that I have software with all the information sitting open on the screen in front of me).
RIDICUL
Overall Review: Rating should be zero stars. But the review doesn't allow for that.
I've sworn by Asus products for a good chunk of the last 20 years. I've ignored equivalent products at lower prices from other vendors due to Asus' track record. The fact that their support division is this helpless and incompetent is just mind-blowing to me. It is also MASSIVE incentive for me to locate a suitable alternate supply channel in the future.
In short, if everything runs right, Asus is great. The second you have a problem, you have a REAL problem. Asus itself. And there's no help or solution for it.
Pros: Solid filled capacitors, and 64 bit PCI slots with all the bells and whistles.
Cons: Asus support. SNAFU!.. We used this motherboard in a business environment in a climate controlled room for several months. 7 months in while it was being used, this motherboard spontaneously burned out below the south bridge chip area, filling the room with smoke, almost causing a fire. In my opinion there was no abnormal power conditions caused by the utility company, or the power supply in the case. Something in that area of the motherboard failed and almost started a fire. So, I RMA'ed this part to Asus, who I have been choosing for motherboards for about 10 years, feeling quite confident this would be an open and shut case, where a new motherboard would be shipped to me. I carefully wrapped the motherboard and specifically the CPU pins with solid cardboard before wrapping the rest in a box. Asus support recieved the mobo, and rejected because of bent pins on the, and would not consider that the board was toast anyways due to the giant burnt spot near the south bridge.
Overall Review: After an hour of pleading with the repair support, they would not budge, they said no matter what was originally wrong, (i suspect they might have bent them to get out of the warranty) motherboard warranty was now void.
Buyer beware - if you buy a motherboard from Asus with these pins, you better have some way to prove they arrived there unbent, otherwise, you too could end up out 300 dollars (plus your shipping). Asus support is not sympathetic to this design issue and will turn you away if anything ever happens to these pins (even if something else is the problem).
Manufacturer Response:
Dear Valued Customer,
We apologize for the issue that you experienced with this motherboard and in trying to get it RMA'd. I have created case number 1075665 for you regarding these issues. Please contact us at 812-282-2787 and provide this case number so that we can notify you of your options you have to exercise your warranty.
Sincerely,
ASUS Support Team
Not a Server, only supports 1/2G non-ECC, unbuffered1/29/2010 12:22:37 PM
Pros: Love the board. Lots of features.
Cons: Right angle sata/sas terminals make it somewhat inaccessible on some cases. Memory requirements not properly stated and documented. (see other thoughts below)
Overall Review: This is NOT a server board. Newegg really should move it.
Memory requirements should be better clarified. Manual states: "You may install 1GB and 2GB non-ECC, unbuffered DDR3 DIMMs into the DIMM". Crucial site says it supports ECC 4GB, but I get no POST beep and an error code of 68 which I can't find in the manual or online and so far ASUS as yet to respond to my online requests.
Pros: I found that the ram that I am using in this board would indeed run at it's rated speed. Specifically, I have six 2Gb sticks in this for 12Gb. It is Corsair dominator GT DDR3 1600 which actually works well at 1600 with 7-7-7-20 timings. I have run memtest86 for days with zero failures. I did have to go into the Bios and go to the Ai Tweaker Screen and select the XMP setting in the Ai Overclock Tuner. This set the DRAM bus voltage to 1.66 volts which is just over the maximum that Intel recommends. The adjustment increment is .02 so I lowered if to 1.64. It's not a big deal but over voltaging a chip will decrease it's life (regardless of the temperature it runs at though high temperatures will also decrease the life also). It is not unusual that a board not be able to support high memory speed in all of its slots but this one does it fine.
Cons: I have a small quibble about the fan speed at the so called quiet setting but that is the fault of the fans more than the board,
Cons: From the box it was missing a jumper for the 0v setting, had to pull one off and old board.

Not something I would get again..5/16/2011 10:01:21 AM
Pros: Comes with all the Bells and Whistles necessary...
Cons: Several BSOD's, would not take 24GB of 1600 DDR3 Ram - issues with memory use higher than 16GB.
When I received the board, it had a bent pin. Despite it having a protector on it - I believe it may have been a reopened box. I did not have time to contact the provider to tell them of this issue - I've repaired bent pins before and I didn't think anything of it.
Overall Review: Mobo would not work with 24GB of Ram(Diff ram/brands) Board itself had grouding issues in 3 diff cases. Worked with 16GB of RAM) Decided this board was not the one I wanted to co-locate, out of state. Reported the issue to newegg that the board was defective, told me that since the pin was bent, it was ASUS' issue.
Attempted to contact Asus twice, both times they dropped my call after talking to a represenative stating they would transfer me to a different number. I'm out of warranty according to them and I'm out $290 for a board that doesnt do what I needed it to do. Luckily the Rampage III didn't have these issues (or the bent pin)
Pros: everything
Cons: nothing
