Will this work okay in a PCIe 16x slot?

Yes. Generally speaking if a PCIe card physically fits in the slot it will work. This even applies the other direction (i.e. x4 card in x1 slot) when motherboards have open back slots although obviously maximum throughput will be limited. There is one caveat to keep in mind. If you're running a mainstream platform (i.e. AM4 or LGA1151) due to the limited lane count, the second x16 slot is often shared with the main slot through what is known as bifurcation. If this is the case then inserting a card into that slot will force the GPU into x8. Refer to the specs/manual for your motherboard to determine which slots share lanes.

does it work well in centos 7?

Do not use centos 7? However, works great in about 8 computers.

does have WOL (wake on lan)?

I spoke to asus support and they said it does if your mobo supports it.

I see driver support for Win 7 - 10, but was curious if the matching Server OS (2008 R2 - 2016) would install and function as well? From experience, the drivers would probably work, but I've seen instances of installers having very rigid version checks, which then requires some hackery to get things to work...

I was able to install the drivers that came with the card on Windows Server 2016 with no issues
