Do I absolutely need to use ECC registered ram from the supported list? Or is regular ram worth a shot?

Generally, yes you absolutely need ECC ram. It will fail to boot in most scenarios if non-ECC is used.  Went through that myself and found that the Xeon processor that I had used required ECC ram.  The non-ECC I had tried wouldn't work.  Check Intel ARK for your selected Xeon processor, but to be on the safe side I'd go ECC to avoid having to return the RAM and re-order the correct kind later.

Does this board support e5-2680 V2 2.8Ghz 10 Core?

Per the product description, this board supports the E5-26xx v3 product family, so no. You can confirm this on the ASUS support site.

i heard that this works with a lot of the QS/ES cpu?  The CPU i have in mind to run with it is the E5-2686 v3.  if anyone runs this cpu with this MB, please let me know your experience.  thanks

I do not run the E5-2686 v3, but I do run dual e5-2698 v3 and they are engineering samples. Both run great and have no issues with running the CPUs on this specific motherboard.  I would presume that since both the E5-2686 v3 and the E5-2698 v3  are similar in nature, you should not have any issues if properly installed and cooled. For CPU cooling I am using two Corsair Hydro H110v2 liquid cooling kits.  I hope this helps!

With the correct Ram modules it is possible however extremely expensive. I can't really think of any reason why it would really be necessary to have that much in one system though. If really curious these are the only two compatible sticks, (M386A8K40BMB-CRC) and (MTA72ASS8G72LZ-2G3A1PG)

I have an E5-2620 v4 singled out at the moment.  So yes.  Just make sure to only install ram in the slots that serve the single proc.

I don't think that ram is on the supported  list. Make sure you check the asus product site for the approved. Ram. It's going to be an ECC type ram.

Yes, it will  run E5 v3 and v4 processors.

I've seen this board supports E5-1600 v4 series on the Asus global website and in Geekbench has an entry. Asus Switzerland said the list is cannonical, which only supports the E52600 v4 series. 1. Does it support the E5-1600 series in single processor mode? (Newegg has the parts to test this.). Can all the DIMM's be populated?

I don't really recommend it but this motherboard will accept a E5-1600 v4/3 series CPU in single configuration only. Doing so limits you to only 8 DIMMs of the 16 slot this motherboard has available. Also note that half of the PCI-E slots will not run because they are buses to the second CPU socket.
