since this mobo only has 4 SATA 6GB connctors will I have enough for an SSD used as a boot drive, a HDD, and an optical drive?

Yes. It works with my i5 6400 and my understanding is the 6500 should give you a small performance boost over the 6400.

One of the reviewers says that using the ever popular Cooler Master 212 evo blocks 2 of the memory slots.  Is there a good CPU fan to fit with this that won't?

Sorry to hear that the 212 won't clear the ram.  It's my favorite air cooler.  U can tell you that the corsair all in one 240mm water cooler fits just fine on this board

Why does it have an HDMI slot? I does not work when detecting a second monitor. Is it for sound?

It as an HDMI slot to allow you to have a digital output with audio and video without the need of a video card   If you're using  Windows 10 and DirectX 12 you should be able to set it up as a second monitor feed .  But under normal circumstances on-board video is disabled in the presence of the video card

Absolutely, however this motherboard is not SLI compatible if you ever plan to double up video cards. If you plan to stick with one card this motherboard is just fine.

It's all a bit confusing.  Motherboard compatibility pages say yes, it supports this RAM (1.5 V) and this CPU (1.35 V).  The voltages are different.  Does the motherboard change the voltage as needed?

I would yes, it does change the voltage as needed. I bought the same motherboard and the same ram (8gb instead of 16gb) and it works great. I didn't have any power issues. Nice build by the way. I hope this helped.

Does this board support both DDR3 and DDR4? I get you can not mix them but if I want to hold off on paying for DDR4 and use DDR3 for now would this be the board to use? The idea is I dont want to have to buy another board when I do upgrade to DDR4

i was told by support it will work with ddr4. i do want to warn you. not all CPU will support ddr4. for i5 and i7, you will need gen 6. not sure on gen 5!
