Pros: ATI is already on top of VISTA drivers. YES this card is VISTA ready. I was sold for the HDR and AA and very high IQ (image quality) I didnt believe how crisp the visuals would be on this card. Makes my Crt monitor look fantastic. If you have a Double Monitor set up. 256mb interface is a major improvement and 512mb video is grand for this price. The HSF is a Blower. Which means Hardly hot air circulation in your case. 80c-90c heat is NORMAL for this card. Shut off is at 120c. I dont know why people complain about the HSF noise. If you put your EAR ON the CASE of your computer. Yeh duh, its noisy. Do you put your ear on the case? I didnt think so.
Cons: No 48 pixel processer like its bigger brother x1900xt. By the time the price drops to a reasonable price range for the x1900xt you dont think there will be a better card than the x1900xt? Just like cars its never a great idea to buy brand new (unless you dont mind wasting good money or just like to brag) or else youll take the biggest hit in depreciation. Most current Gen games cant take advantage of the 48 pixel processor JUST yet. So for $320 for an X1800xt 512 (as of 5/27/06) is great.
Overall Review: NEVER been a loyal fan of the RED OR the GREEN team!!! I pay very close attention to quality and price and Memory interfaces. please I hate it when people compare Cards when they have different Memory size. Went from Geforce FX5500 to X850 pro to 7600gt and now this. I Originally was lookin at the x1800xt 256, vs 7900gt256. Compare the price, and bench mark to any Website that YOU TRUST. Both have their strong Framerates on some games, Nvidia specializes in OpenGL on low AA and low AF. When on higher AA, HDR and AF, the 7900gt suffers on frame rates and the X1800xt pulls ahead. I personally love great Image Quality. Unless your into high frames on openGL games like Quake4 with Low AA and Low IQ. Price difference for something SO CLOSE in framerates is not worth an extra $60-10 for the GREEN team and only 256mb? For about $60 more, you have the 512 version of this x1800xt. Sorry i went with the IQ and 512mb. It really didnt matter at all if it was Nvidia or ATI.
