is this a laptop sized drive?  I want to use it as a back up drive.

This is a 2.5" hard drive, so yes it is made for laptops.

Since it is SATA, you can still use it in a desktop (provided your motherboard supports SATA), but an adapter will be required to fit it in the tray.

Personally, because these drives are so small, I've screwed them in to the side of the drive bay without an adapter and never had any difficulties, but then those computers are seldom moved.

It would still be best to use an adapter.

I also want to add that PS3 hard drives CAN be upgraded. I have done it 2 times on my own.
Just be sure that you have a portable HDD or flash drive to download the latest system software update from your computer, as you'll need to apply it to your PS3 as soon as you get your new hard drive (HDD) installed. It's an extremely simple process and you can find guides and videos online if you need them. But really, it's so intuitive that I don't think you will need a guide.

BTW, if you use the "backup and restore" feature of your PS3 to backup its contents to a portable hard drive, you can copy it to your new hard drive after you install it and it will be like a clone of your old PS3, with all the games and everything. The only thing you'll lose is your messages, playlists and themes (which you can download again).

It'll fit any laptop as long as it's Serial ATA & the Operating System is Windows Vista & above. Windows XP may not recognize a 1tb hard drive.

My Samsung 880z notebook hard drive began to fail and at one point the the motherboard would not be able to read the hard drive, so i want to replace my hard drive. My question is would this hard drive that isn't a toshiba be compatible with my samsung set up?

(i am sticking with the same specs as the toshiba only notable difference is the Cache size of 8MB to 16MB)

won't be a problem at all if you have software to clone your existing drive to the new one (in that case it usually doesn't matter the brand, spin speed, cache size, ssd vs hdd as long as the replacement drive is big enough to hold the existing data).  If you are going to do a factory restore with a set of DVD's you made or got from Samsung, the drive may have to be the same size, as to storage space, or bigger.  Some factory restore discs won't restore to drives that are smaller than what came with the computer and some will, but they don't care about brand, model, type, cache, etc.  I know using a Windows Backup System Image you typically have to get a drive that is exactly the same size, but again brand/model doesn't make a difference.

If not doing a factory restore from DVDs or a flash drive, I like Acronis for cloning drives, it pretty much lets you clone a drive to anything.  It's great for moving windows installations from high capacity hard drives to smaller capacity SSD drives.

Very likely, but check the old drives transfer rate on the label first.  This one shows 3.0Gb/s and your old drive maybe 6.0Gb/s so this drive would seem slower then the old drive.  All drives are generic, but there are a few different sizes.  Same size should always work.

To be honest, this  WD-AV25 drive was ordered by mistake as I was looking for a 3.5 Inch drive. I returned it to New Egg and purchased the correct one that I needed .

Most laptop systems use a 2.5 Inch drive but due to the propitiatory nature on how different manufacturers  set up systems I cannot say weather this drive, though it will fit, will work in your laptop system. You might want to contact the manufacturer of your lap top to be sure the drive is compatible and instructions on how to install your operating system on the new drive.

An example, I bought a HP laptop a few years ago. When I first purchased it the operating system in the lap top allowed me to make a complete backup of the operating system on to DVDs. Later when the hard drive failed I found that the lap top  would not recognize the hard drive. HP suggested I run the restore program that I previously burned on the DVDs when I first got the system. It worked and the hard drive (much larger in storage area then the original) is still performing

Has anyone tried putting this drive in an external enclosure with an esata interface and connected to a Verizon FiOS DVR.  Is the drive recognized by DVR model QIP7232-2?

Yes it works with FiOS. The enclosure I bought wouldn't fit it, so I took off the adapter and just plugged it in without the case. I was lazy at that point and just needed to get the wife to stop complaining about the DVR room haha.
