are the buttons programmable for games? like can they be set for hot keys?

Technically, no, as there is no software that comes with the mouse.

However, I decided to give it a shot myself only after finding and testing a program called X-Mouse Button Control, which allows you to remap the buttons on *any* mouse to do whatever you want. (Note that I don't know if X-Mouse will allow you to reprogram the DPI button on the top, as I haven't tried to). So because of that, the non-programmable nature of the hardware was moot, and other than that, I've been very happy with the mouse itself. The build quality is solid and the buttons responsive. Definitely a nice mouse for only $20. Keep in mind also that it has few buttons to begin with (just the three "clicks", the two side buttons, and the DPI button).

scroll wheel - notched or smooth?

It's a rubber coated wheel with notches. I have to say, for the money, this mouse is a steal! Very responsive, comfortable and accurate. It is lightweight, not heavy or weighted like more expensive mice so you'll want to keep that in mind as well if you like the weighted ones. But I think you'll like it.

The mouse I have is great, but the wire is short and will be a hassle for gaming. I would like to know how long the wire is so it can go behind my desk and plug into the back of my PC. So, basically, my question is how long is the wire?
