RBG case with good airflow but requires some improvements 6/26/2018 5:36:23 PM

Pros: - Open front (mesh) providing excellent 3x120mm air intake.

- In my opinion having a top "dome" panel cover is a plus, if you use a water cooler under it.

- Enough building space, enough room for cable routing for me. The front side cable channel is ok. Bottom channel was just enough for all my cables. Top cutouts are well located for me.

- Four USB (only two are 3.0) and even SD+MicroSD slots on top IO.

- AIO location on top doesn't interfere with the motherboard cooling or cables.

- PSU cover looks nice, if you like that, though these covers reduce airflow. Also see cons for CF/SLI setups.

- RGB strip on front mesh if you like that.

- It's a pro&con at the same time - there is a panel/cover between the bottom of the case and the floor. See other thoughts.

Cons: - Not a big con, but at the price of over $100 when I bought it, one needs to take it into account - front fans are optional. I bough 3x120mm RGB Aerocools separately. Not a con, but take additional price into account.

- UPDATED POINT = LOWERING RATING FROM 4 TO 3 EGGS: After several times trying to clean the top and front cover, I decided to lower the Eggs from 4 to 3 - the reason is that I cannot fully remove front & top covers for washing and post-installation maintenance. I cannot get to the screws of my 240mm AIO because top cover is held in place in place by IO cables. To do that I have to open the back panel, untie everything, pull the top IO, so that I can unscrew the cables! This is not ok. Over time this became more and more annoying. So, the covers are not completely removable for cleaning or maintenance. This is 2018 and it's an oversight that makes cleaning of the case a pain. Top IO being embedded into to the top panel, instead of being embedded in the frame is a serious oversight becoming more and more annoying over time.

- Some sharp edges. Lack of rubber grommets in cutouts.

- A debatable con: PSU cover is nice, but limits a bit of airflow, especially for CF/SLI.

- PSU bottom filter is a plastic sheet with perforated small wholes, not a mesh filter and it's a bit hard to remove.

- I am not sure if it's a con or not - the PWM hub is ok, has two switches for speed and I think light, but I replaced it with an Aerocool p7 hub. However, the top IO also has two buttons dedicated to RGB effects and I just couldn't figure them out properly, even with the P7 RGB hub. It's a bit confusing and one button on top IO doesn't work, but I am able to use the P7 software to ensure the RGB changes.

- This is an acrylic window model. Acrylic gets very(!) easily scratched. Unfortunately the P7-c1 Pro with tempered glass is not sold in the US.

Overall Review: - I bought this from a Newegg shop on the biggest auction site (whose name NE doesn't allow me to publish, though NE has a shop there. Right...:)) Anyway, I got it on December 08, 2017, under the advertised price, due to a coupon. My kids begged for it, so I couldn't refuse ahead of Christmas. And Newegg always delivered perfect product to me, for which they deserve congratulations.

To the case itself:
- I had to call to make sure the description was correct. At the time of purchase there was an info that 280mm rad would fit on top. It doesn't. To my knowledge the case could take only 240mm on top and I called Newegg before buying the AIO. Newegg called Aerocool right there and the case maker confirmed that a 280mm AIO would NOT fit there. I hope it was rectified. I am writing this just to make sure all builders are aware that top radiator placement is for 240mm only.

- In my opinion having a top "dome" cover is a plus, if you use a water cooler there - I could hide an 240mm AIO water cooler under it nicely without interfering with MB cooling, as the dome hides a recessed top frame, designed specifically for a 240mm rad.

- However, after I built the system, serious troubles appeared when I wanted to remove my AIO post-install for a cleanup etc - the top IO cables (IO being embedded into the top cover) that I already connected and tided up wouldn't allow me to do that properly, only partly (back side). I had to improvise to uninstall and then install the AIO back. Why the top IO was not embedded into the frame (instead of being embedded in top cover)? Costs probably? But at over $100 (at the time of purchase, without the coupon), this could have been done. I had another case before, at a comparable price, that had the IO separate from the panel. In the future I'd avoid cases that have top/front IO shield embedded into respective panels.
UPDATE: In fact I'd specifically avoid this particular case, due to that and other cons (see above).

- If you use an AIO on top, there is no dust problem as the fans would blow upwards and prohibit dust to enter, but if you don't have an AIO or two fans blowing upwards - there is no filter under the panel and when the PC doesn't work, there is a danger of dust falling in the case even if you have fans (they don't spin, no upward flow, dust settles in - if there is an AIO, the dust at least stops there and then gets blown up/away next day).

- Choose your front fans carefully. It's an open design in front and top and the noise just bleeds out without any obstruction. I had a somewhat similar case and mitigated the problem with very quiet fans that had good airflow.

- I'm actually fine with HDD cage, as I have an SSD on the PSU cover and two HDDs mirroring in the HDD cage. They do limit the space under the PSU cover, but I really don't see any other option and I am actually quite fine with it.

- There is enough space for cables behind the MB. The cutout is just fine.

- I have an RX580 CF setup, so it need lots of airflow from bottom and middle front fans and the PSU cover, which I actually like, but it still limits the airflow a bit. This is not a big dilemma that cannot be resolved - other case makers perforated their PSU covers to both keep the cover and to mitigate some of the airflow problem. Unfortunately this wasn't the case with this Aerocool - no PSU cover perforation.

- The case has a lot of clearance from the floor, but there is also that panel/cover in-between the bottom of the case and the floor. On one hand if you have a carpet, it keeps it away from the PSU intake, on another the cover obstructs the access to the bottom filter, which is really hard to access. I am not very sure about this panel, I think the case is so tall (clearance is high) that it could have been avoided. I think Aerocool just molded the plastic of the case this way, so it's hard to do that, so it's subjective, I think.

- My old intel 3770k on Asrockz77extreme6 setup gets a nice 75C under heavy Prime95 stress test (custom 8-1792) being OCd at 4.5Ghz with those three front fans and top 240mm very quiet AIO (Celsius24). In games I never went over 65C with this overclocked CPU in this case and two VGA cards, allowing such a nice front airflow and AIO placement on top, as I wanted to avoid hot air blown to the 2xRX580 in CF.

All in all, I'd give the case 4 eggs due to all above factors, but lowered it to 3 eggs after a time of use and disappointment with the cables stuck on top IO, prohibiting top cover removal for servicing.
