Does this work with the use of OBS? Does it work with the Video Capture Device source, or the Game Capture source? And if not, which capture card(s) do?

Yes this works with OBS. As you mention, you will use "video capture device" as your source. You could try the software that comes with the device also, but I found it pretty primative for streaming options.

How do capture cards like these work? I want to record my walkthroughs/gameplay for my YouTube channel. WOuld I plug my monitor into this capture card or my graphics card to the capture card?

there are 2 inputs and 2 outputs. an HDMI input + output, and 3.5 mm jack input/output. You connect your GPU's hdmi into the input for hdmi on the capture card. The output connects to your monitor with dvi to hdmi or hdmi to dvi adpater that comes with the package. If you have a usb headset, you'll need a work around. The capture card doesn't come with a 3.5 to usb so to get your sound. the 3.5mm input should be connected to your motherboard or sound card. The output should be connected to headset, speakers, etc. I was confused when I was first setting this up, but now that i have it done. It is a very simple and clean install. This won't work on ps3 due to HDCP lock. As an alternative i'd recommend, dxtory or nvidia shadowplay (can record n stream if you have nvidia gpu)

Will the dual HDMI ports allow and extended desktop?

Not sure what you mean by this...  The one HDMI port is IN from your source, while the other is OUT to the destination.  So in a normal setup, it would be:

Your PC/Gaming Console HDMI Out
*HDMI Cable*
Avermedia Card HDMI In
Avermedia HDMI Out
*HDMI Cable*
Monitor/TV

If your video card has 2 outputs, then you could clone your primary display so that you are outputting your video to 2 cables, and plug one into your monitor, and another into the Avermedia capture card.  This allows you to not have to pass video through the card to a monitor.

Can this card capture older systems like gamecube, nes, snes?

The card is designed to capture HDMI video/audio. Older consoles (anything before the PS3 and X-Box 360) will not have the necessary connections to connect directly the card. You will need some kind of converter to translate the signal from component/composite/coaxial to HDMI.

Question 5

Ok so I'm planning on building a M-ITX live stream/recording machine and the only PCI-Express slot on the board is a PCI-Express 3.0 X16, how would I hook this card up if I do get it for the build, or do I plug it into the PCI-Express 3.0 X16 slot?

The avermedia will plug into any pci express slot. i've had an x1 slot burn out and i moved my avermedia to a spare x16 slot and it works no problem. all pci-e device types (x1, x4, x8) are compatible with the x16 slot because of the way they were designed. So if you have a spare x16 slot put your avermedia in there (should be obvious how to fit the card in the slot). be aware of the firmware issues (read the reviews) and the card should work just fine. I recommend not updating the firmware for the card as it isn't really necessary for basic streaming and recording. Hope I helped.

Will this product work through my laptop or do I have to have a desktop computer?

You need a PCIex1 slot.  Technically you could use an extension ribbon from your laptops mini pcie slot but this is just the 'technically' answer that tell you that you can, but your shouldn't.  It will require you to buy a ribbon extension and you will need to leave the bottom of your laptop open or mod the plastic plate, overall its a hassle, don't do it.
AverMedia has USB devices that are comparable to this unit, like the AVerMedia C875 and the AVerMedia C285.  The AVerMedia C875 (Live Gamer Portable) Video Device would be me pick.

Question 7

Having a GTX 1080 in my rig paired with an i7 6700K, recording my pc footage  easy. However, I'm considering this card for recording console footage. Is it possible to configure this card to only act act as an HDMI input into my PC? Or would I be better off purchasing a different card?

Yes you can just record the input, but I can't imagine playing through a capture program. The output has no  input lag and can also be configured as an output for another monitor, it's definitely a strong piece of hardware. For capturing it's amazing, you can use the card's processor to do all the work, it can handle 720 @ 60fps or 1080 @ 30. For streaming though you're at the mercy of your processor. Which is why I have a 6700k build on order. But if all you want is to capture, this card literally does all the work so your 6700k can save it's energy for running editing programs.

So I'm planning on building a video editing/ recording machine and I need to know if this is compatible with windows 8.1?

Yes, it works with 8.1 just fine. I do recommend NOT upgrading firmware on these. 3 of them bricked on me when trying to upgrade the firmware. The manufacturer was nice enough to RMA me new ones and the last one with the newest firmware but in hind site, it wasn't worth the trouble. Other than that the product has worked flawlessly for me so far on Windows 8.1 and 7.

Does this record console games or only PC?

This does both, 
The way this card works is that there is an input and output HDMI and 3.5mm audio, 
So the device records the input and at the same time outputs real-time video and audio.

So if it has an HDMI output this can record it.

I've had mine for a while and it has worked great from gaming to video tutorials to just messing around.

So I got to looking at the card requirements and it says "VGA card with support for DirectX 9.0c or above (Standalone graphics card is recommended for HD video capturing.)", and I'm planning on making this a M-ITX build and this card will take up the only PCI slot on the motherboard, so would intel intergrated graphics be able to support this card to at least record 1080p 30fps videos or if needed to 720p at 30fps?

  I have one of these hardware video capture cards and use it with a PCI slot video card with HDMI output. I use this capture card alot and find it wonderful for 1080p 30fps, 40 inch monitor full screen capture. It causes very low PC load compared to software capture only. I would very much expect you to get the capture you are looking for if you set your build up with DirectX 9.0c or above compatible Windows to meet the DirectX requirement and a motherboard with an HDMI output socket onboard graphics card capable of displaying the 1080p video you want to capture flawlessly. I imagine the recommendation about separate video card is to protect against wimpy original video output source and a maxed out system being added onto because, regardless of the reason, if the Capture card is not fed good consistent video then it will not capture good consistent video. Once again, this hardware capture card does not seem tax the computer as much as software capture only, but do yourself a favor and make sure the rest of your build can handle HD video processing all the way through to your data storage drives with power to spare and you will likely enjoy as you expect. Sorry not able to guarantee better without specs.
