Can this be used for the Playstation 4?

It most certainly can. I've just recently used it to record The Order 1886. You must first disable the HDCP option in the settings first however (Settings > System > Uncheck Enable HDCP).

whats the difference between this and the live gamer portable?

This requires a Windows computer to capture. The portable will capture to a USB 3.0 HD, I believe.

I bought this recently and I cant get the main drivers to install so I cant use it...what do I do?

Are you using the ones from their website? Also, I ran into an issue with the firmware driver and my anti~virus software, so make sure that your anti~virus is not preventing anything from being installed.

Can you simply stream from this device via the usb to video capture software on a host machine?

I believe so but only on windows. On Mac you have to use their software which only records. I've seen videos on YouTube showing people streaming with it on a Mac but I have yet to figure it out. You will still need a pretty decent computer to do streaming because your system will end up encoding the video for a specific streaming service like twitch. There is no problem just recording. I was planning to use my Mac to stream my PC gaming but realized it didn't work. Also I installed windows on my MacBook Pro (2009 model) and the hardware couldn't stream the video smoothly. Is it possible to use this to capture game footage on older consoles, such as Dreamcast and PS2? And if not, is there a method or cable that can be added to enable said capture?

The LGP lite only has hdmi in and out but the normal lgp comes with a component connection cable which i know will work with PS2 but im not sure if dreamcast had component cable but there are a ton of cables online so i would look into  finding a component to hdmi cable  to input into the card. And you should be able to hdmi out to your tv or monitor just fine. Hope i helped :-)
