Goal: copy old VCR tapes to computer, by connecting VCR player to computer with this device. Does this work?

Yes, the cord works fine. The program is alittle glitchy and it can be tricky to make sure you are capturing the sound and the video but overall it works fine. But whatever you do, do not leave your computer while this is running and let the tape stop....your computer will crash and it could kill your hard drive.

You plug the red and white into the audio out on your VCR, and either the yellow into the video port on the VCR, or the S Video into the S Video port on your VCR

Install drivers first before plugging the USB cable into your computer.  When prompted plug the USB cable into your computer.

When you launch their Screen Capture software after installation it will pop up a viewing window, and select play on your VCR to watch your tape in the viewing window.  You can also select to record, and while watching the VCR it will record to your hard disk so you can play back later from your computer.

Once on your computer you can actually watch it on a larger screen than the one that comes with the software by selecting Windows Media Player to play the recorded movie, etc.

i used it on windows 8,  works perfect. just install the software and run it.   i did however have to search for the exe file after installation. a shortcut wasnt put on the desktop or pinned in the start page.

My 
vc 500 came with EZ Grabber  but it will not work with win 7. I have been looking to buy an updated version of EZ but no  luck. I have also been trying to find Arc Soft Show Biz. It was supposed to be with the  VC 500 but was not there. Do I really need these additional programs or will the VC 500 alone do the job?

I've had VC500, EZ Grabber and Arc Soft for a couple of years and use them infrequently,  I need to get back to it.  There is a large archive of analog video that awaits digitizing.  The system seems to work sufficiently well.  I've run all three on a Windows 7 Dell laptop, a Windows 8 Dell PC, a Windows 10 Dell PC and a Windows 8 HP PC.  I'm not an expert, and it has been some time since I've used it.  I believe the paperwork included indicates a website where you can find answers to the installation and use.  There is also a video that was helpful.  You can either find the video through the website, or perhaps directly on YouTube.
You need EZ Grabber software to use the device.  I don't know if other capture software will work with it.  Arc Soft Biz is another software, used to manipulate the video into a finished product, but other softwares can be used for that.  For the price the whole system has worked nicely.  I've recommended it to others.

Does this require a certain video card?

Accepted Answer

No.  Just a USB Port.  This device captures video and sound FROM a DVD, VHS, or other video source to a PC.   The video source needs RCA or S-video output ports.

Question 6

Can you use this to record gameplay from an Xbox 360 or PS3 or other game console?

It records audio exceptionally well, video/audio OK, but you must have a pretty fast machine.  I record music out of a digital mixing studio quite easily and with a good quality ..

I have a PAL VCR and want to capture PAL VHSs and burn the capture to a DVD. Tried several other USB capture devices and capture software and they captured NTSC just fine, but none would capture PAL. Would appreciate someone telling me that he was quite successful in capturing PAL VHSs (obviously from a PAL VCR). If so, how were you successful?

According to the manufacturers specifications it should capture PAL though I have never tried myself.

Why does it chop up video?

Define "chop up"?

Are there video encoding artifacts?  No.

Does it make smaller clips? Not automatically, it will make one continuous video, depending on how long you record.

For instance if you set a video to record and leave for several hours, if the input source runs out it will continue to record the blank screen.

You will have to remove the unwanted parts in post production software.

I know it says you can record gameplay from ps3 and xbox but can you hook it up and just play your ps3 on your laptop screen? im stuck in the hospital for months and would love to be able to hook my ps3 up to my laptop and play it, im running windows 8 soon to be windows 10 on wed

I don't think that is going to work.  Even if you wrote a bunch of custom software.  The VC500 is not designed for real time video conversion.  I've also never seen a laptop with a video in port or that can take compressed video coming in via a USB port and display it.  Maybe get an inexpensive LCD screen or a projector?
