the JBL j33i has the in line to control sound from Apple and Droid. this means there is some functionality for the two Phones.  I  found basic functionality with mp3  players.

i have the j33a -for portable devises that's a little more expensive.

I typically find that to increase the volume using headphones you can get active noise cancelling headphones that use independent batteries to power its circuitry to block incoming sound and often boost the volume. These will only block out the sound, but they do an absolutely excellent job.

Unlike some earbuds, these don't have volume controls.  Other than that, they work fine. The sound is good, and the flat cable means they don't get tangled in my pocket like some others.

FYI - the sound quality is pretty good
The only "con" is that the cable is a bit stiff but super strong.
