Why is this listed as a 5.1 channel system but it shows 7 speakers?

The picture is wrong for this item. The item that shows up will the right system, but not one in the picture. Check onkyo's site for the correct system. The specs on newegg are correct.

Does the receiver decode Dolby Pro Logic II?

Don't waste your money, Onkyo is Garbage, I bought this system from Newegg over a year ago and I've had nothing but problems, even sent it to Onkyo for Warranty repair and they didn't fix a thing.

I am searching for a home theater system that can also accommodate things like VCR, turntable (phonographs) and cassette decks.  Does this have auxiliary or other hookups for this purpose?

Yes. The receiver has six inputs of RCA and six of the newer HDMI type.  They will be named game, dvd, etc. but that doesn't matter on what you plug in. If you use the optical cable connection to your TV (very easy one cable) the others will be free.  Look at an image of the back of the receiver at the Onkyo site to see all the inputs.  Very capable system for a reasonable price.  You may want to use heavier speaker wire.
