how to replace the imaging unit?

Open the front of the printer just as you would to replace the toner cartridge. Pull out the toner cartridge and then slide out the imaging unit which is basically just under the toner cartridge.

With most printers the toner cartridge and imaging unit are the same part. which drives up the price of the toner cartridge. Since the Imaging unit lasts about twice as long as a toner cartridge having them separate should theoretically save some money.

We have the SL-M2825DW/XAC and ordered this cartridge for it based on the recommendation here on newegg but it doesn't fit due to the armature. Is there a set of instructions regarding removal of it that I may have missed?

This unit is the imaging drum, and not the toner cartridge.  They come out in two separate pieces.  The imaging drum is the part that the toner sits on top of.

With the toner cartridge out of the printer, grab the part that the toner sits on top of, and pull on it the same direction as the toner cartridge.  This should remove the imaging drum and allow you to replace it.
