What is the physical size of this drive?

Using the default graphic (showing side, front, and top) as a reference, the distance from the bottom-most point to the corner toward the right (call it the x-axis) is 4 & 3/4 inches (twelve centimeters); from that bottom-most corner to the corner toward the left (call it the z-axis) is 1 & 9/16 inches (four centimeters); from either left or right corner straight up (call it the y-axis) is 6 & 7/8th inches (seventeen point four centimeters). The largest flat surfaces of the device bow outwards slightly; within about 5/16th of an inch from either end of the x-axis the z-axis depth (the distance sandwiched between two large hardback books) is 1 & 11/16 inches (4.3 centimeters).

That was much more fun than simply saying 6.75" tall, 1.75" wide, and 4.75" deep.

says desktop hard drive  can i use it with a lap top ?

Yes, it works fine with a laptop, provided you can use a USB port on your laptop.  Keep in mind this unit has an external power supply, so it will need to be tethered to a AC outlet, unlike the various USB powered portable external hard drives made by Seagate and others.

Can this back-up drive be used on multiple computers?

Yes, I am using it on two computers now.  It sets up individual backup drives and recognizes the correct one on start-up.

will it work with a mac?

I have not tried it on a mac but I don't see why it should not
you'll have to reformat it if you have pc's you would use it on format it in exfat so both can read and write to it.it's not the fastest usb 3.0 drive either

Is this comparable with my windows 7 hp pavilion laptop-will it work properly?

Yea it will work fine but what's a little scary is my first external hard drive failed right off the back. Also things I didn't know is seagates failure rate on drives is super high look it up before buying.

I don't know if I understand the question. As an external hard drive with backup software it can be used for either a 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive. You will need to plug it into a wall outlet (cable included for power) and connect using a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port (cable included for data).

Suppose you have five file groups of 100 photos in each group file name. Can you simply transfer: (1) all 5 groups at once; (2) one group of 100 photos one at a time; or (3) must you do it the real hard way, that is, each one of the photos individually?

When you say ‘groups’, I assume 
that you are talking about folders.
While holding down the -Ctrl- key,
click on each folder that you want to transfer.
You can then right-click your mouse, 
and use -Copy- or use -Cut-, and then -Paste-.
Or just click and drag.
(I prefer copy and paste)

Click your mouse on your first target.
Then hold down -Shift- and click your mouse 
on your second target. 
This will highlight all points from 'A' to point 'B'.
..........
You can also use -Ctrl- + A (to highlight ALL)
THEN use  -Ctrl- + C (to COPY)
you can use -Ctrl- + V to paste !!!
(I prefer to -Paste- with the right-click on the mouse)

I purchased Item # 22-178-109 in December 2013. The item was a 2TB, USB 3 Ext HD, Product Discp: EXTHD 2TB|ST STCA2000100 U3 R. It was supposed to be USB 3.0 compliant.  However, the unit came with a USB 2.0 cable for connecting the HD to the computer.  It is the exact same connection that I have for a previously purchased 2TB USB 2.0 EXT HD. I have noticed that USB 3.0 cables are usually thicker and usually blue in color instead of black.  Please explain? James D. Schlumbohm

Unless you have a newer computer or have added a PCI express 3.0 card, you won't be able to achieve the speeds 3.0 is supposedly capable of. However the HD will operate very nicely at 2.0. I have 3 Seagate ext. HD's,(including the one you purchased) and honestly I do not know if it's faster or not. And, to answer your question, the connections are color coded blue to specify 3.0. The cables are the same, and thicker cables are not necessary for faster speeds, quality cables are.

Can i use it just for storage and not for back up??

Yes. It comes with some software on the drive that can be used for backup and social media purposes but you can just ignore or delete them.
