Will this product work with USB 2.0?

YES THIS DRIVE SHOULD WORK JUST FINE WITH USB 2.0

The drive is backwards compatible. It will work with  USB 2.0 or 3.0
The only difference is that when using USB 2.0 the data transfer rate will be at the slower USB 2.0 rate and not the faster USB 3.0 transfer rate.

I bought 2 and they seem to be working fine.

Do you have to use the backup software that comes with it ?  or can I just open Windows Explorer, see it as an external drive and copy file to/from it?

I do not use the backup software that came with it. I just use it through Windows Explorer as you suggested.  Works great. I am happy with it.

Does this external backup drive have an on/off switch?

No it does not,  I have it attached to my computer at work so it is constantly backing up data all the time.

It comes with a cable fitting the device on one end and an USB computer connection.
System-wise it is compatible with USB 2.0 and 3.0 which are part of a the motherboard system.

Yes, it is very fast backup.  It works so well that I hardly notice that backup is ocurring.

I am a retired Tech Specialist in a school system and I don't use it with a separate hub but I see no reason why it would not work, You probably would not get USB 3 speed unless the hub was USB 3.

Does this drive come with backup software?  Does it work with Windows backup on sbs server 2008?

As I recall it comes with some Seagate software to synchronize files.  Kind of like File History in Windows.  This is strictly a copy of files from specified directories (like documents, photos, etc).  So it's not likely to be suitable for a server.

I formatted the disk and set it up for use by Windows Server Backup (the built-in backup feature of Windows server).  It's been working great for many months.  Server is version 2012 R2.

Considering that SBS 2008 uses the same Windows Server Backup engine, I think it should work fine for you.  I have not had any problems with backup to Advanced Format disks so long as they are USB.  There has been an issue with AF internal disks (SATA) with older versions of Windows Server.

With this drive connected to a desktop PC is it R & W shareable to other PCs on a Home network?

I don't know.  I just have it plugged into a single laptop for back up purposes.  Sorry I don't have more info.

Does it matter what OS you're running?  I'm still using Windows Vista.

It doesn't matter which OS your using, since you could completely wipe the drive to reclaim the space consumed by the Seagate backup software, unless you want to use it.  You could then reformat it with whatever filesystem you choose, as long as it support up to 2TB volumes.
