Can you use these solely for music listening on other media, i.e. laptops, mp3 players, keyboard output etc?  thanks

All my devices are Apple, so I cannot say for sure, but my 219S do work properly on the Audio Out jack of our TV (which is not Apple!).  This TV puts out a fixed volume to that jack, and the headphones can adjust it down.  They are not powered headphones so they cannot make the volume louder than the device puts out.  The audio quality is great and the background noise is impressively dampened by the ear cushions.

If the phone has a headphone jack, these will work.

can I use on planes to listen to movies and block out engine noise?

Accepted Answer

It will block out some noise as any over the ear headphones will do, but they are not noise canceling so if you want that full effect you will have to go for something specifically built for that, and it will cost you quite a bit more since they are much more advanced headphones that do that type of thing.
