Well, they have the ability to be open-backed. Under the fabric mesh there are perforations in the plastic, but Sennheiser put foam tape on the inside to block the holes. Luckily though they come apart easily and you can take the foam tape out to make them true open-back. That's what I did right out of the box and they sound fantastic.
