Question 1

I have a new graphic card (MSI GEFORCE GTX 1060 6GG) that needs an 8-pin PCI-Express supplementary power connection.  My current PSU (Ultra 450W - ULT-LSV450) has 1 SATA and 1 MOLEX available at this time.  I wanted to turn the available MOLEX into a SATA, then connect both SATA connections to this SATA to this 8-pin PCI-Express supplementary power connection to power the new graphic card.  Trying to use what I have instead of buying a new power supply.  All other PC specs are good.  Will this work for the graphic card???

Currently, the "best answer" says don't bother. I disagree.  Do some more homework and find out your power needs and usage.  My understanding is that your 1060 card will draw less than 90Ws, split between the PCIe bus and power connector. So you need about  45W on that GPU power connector. If you can find connectors to put 12V power on the right connector, I think it will work. I'm trying to do something similar with a Dell 7040, it has 240W power supply that I haven't been able to use more than 100W.  I'm pretty sure the 1060 will work there, if I can come up with a GPU power connector.   I can't easily upgrade the power supply.   (I was surprised to see this connector, but it will save me from breaking out the soldering gun)

Question 2

I am wondering why I cannot find the opposite of this?  I have a couple of unused 6 pin connectors from the power supply that I would like to convert to SATA power connectors to power hard drives.

Short answer, the 6 pins have only 12 volt lines but hard drives need 12 volt and 5 volts.

Long answer: you should be able to find splitters for your sata cables you have from hyour PSU.  You can theoretically chain a lot of adapters. Conservative estimate, you have 18 awg wire, giving 10 amps, for at least 70 watts, resulting in...

20 ish ssd drives or 10 platter drives per cable bundle. You could probably safely double that number.
