can i capture video from a sony camcorder which sends out a video format of MPEG4 H264 (file extension .mts)??

Accepted Answer

If you connect the video output of the camera to the appropriate input on this device, the software included with the unit will record it to your computer as a .wmv file.  It does not read files off of your camera, it wants a video signal (composite, s-video, component, or HDMI).

Is this device compatible with Windows 8?

Per StarTech is is good for Windows® 8 (32/64bit) / Windows® 7 (32/64bit) / Vista(32/64) / XP(32/64).

Please note that this unit does not play back videos to the TV.  It is a pass-through box between your device and TV.

I am not real impressed with this unit (but it is one of the few boxes under $300 that do HD)  The picture quality is great but it records MTS files, which must be converted to MPG/AVI/MP4 with their software, which is not particularly fast.  The software it comes with can't do HD conversions in all formats unless you pay money for an upgrade.   From the mfg sheet I was lead to believe that it did hardware encodingin the above formats.

The specs say it requires a quad core cpu, but I'm using a dual core in the same speed range and it works just fine.

Is compatible with Wirecast 4?

Sorry don't know.  If the video or source is HDCP protected will not work.  Audio does but no video.

VERY unlikely!
This is a Compression Box for making h.246 file off of its USB 2.0 output (sending h.264).  Not a video capture 'card' that sends raw data to an encoder app like FMLE 3.2

Question 6

What is the range of bitrates the unit uses to record?  The owners manual shows a bar from zero to 3000bts but its not clear to what other settings this might apply.

Surely for 1080 recording, something higher than 3K is required?

Also--does the audio synch with the video?  That has been a real issue on too many brands.

You should use vlc or ffmpeg to stream to a file then you can select the bit rate you want to use

Is there any latency from the unit to the PC - the real question is, will it work for live streaming?

Yes, about 1.5-2 seconds of delay.  As far as streaming with it, unless you're going to stream a screen capture, I've not found software that works directly with this unit yet.
