Yes, the combination of high end processor, 16 gb ram and discrete video board make this a good cad laptop...  It won't match a desktop with 4ghz processor and 64 gig ram; but its a LAPTOP!  This is what I bought my Daughter for college @ MIT.

Is there any chance the hdmi port can be used as an input? Trying to import video from an minidv camcorder.

Usually HDMI will only relay Audio/Video data. To actually import the video, you probably need USB or a memory card (SD for example)

What's the battery life like?

It has been great for my needs. Of course this is in comparison to a large HP dv8 that I was using.
I have used it to run a very demanding music writing program for over 2 hours. I think the ample RAM keeps it from having to work so hard. It's also whisper quiet.
