Does the illumination show through the keys, or just around them?

Both. However, I found that the through the key illumination is pretty much useless because it is so dim. The around the keys illumination is cool looking, but if you're looking for well lit key characters this is probably not the keyboard for you. I was disappointed, too. Sorry.

Does it only light up blue or can u change the color?

It can be lit up blue, but that's about it, you can control it and make the lights do different movements

How long are the cables?

at least 3 ftk, I placed my on the top of my desktop (not on keyboard seat) then it will go down all the way of my gamer back panel, still there a lot of elbowroom I guess good length it is.
