Will this also charge your laptop or do you need to plug the laptop in also to an outlet?

You also need to plug in your laptop to an outlet. This device does NOT charge your laptop.

Question 2

It appears to have a single ethernet port. What is the purpose? Why would I need to connect this device to the network?

If you want your internet connection to be hard wired and wireless then having the cat5 cable plugged into the dock would give you a more stable internet connection.  The only thing you have connected to your laptop is one USB 3.0 connection.

It appears the Ethernet port MUST be connected direct to a router, NOT to a router connected network hub?

I did not have your particular problem.What problem I do have is that periodically the video subsystem just stops working. You have to remove the cable and unplug the unit for 15 sec. or so and plug the power back in. I don't recommend this unit. Pay a little more and get one that works all the time.

Can video games be played reliably while using this dock? The Sims, or Steam games?

I've played FF6 on it with no problem, but i'm not really a big gamer. I would say beware if your OS is windows 10 w/ the creators update because I can't get the docking station to stop turning on and off constantly even after updating all of the drivers Display Link and all of the peripherals. I can't even use it right now because the flashing monitor is awful. (HP pavilion 15 laptop, btw)

The 2 red USB ports are for charging and can charge your smartphone or tablet up to 2.4A. The docking station provides 2 USB 2.0 ports and 2 USB 3.0 ports for use.
