Will it work with USB 2.0 computer?

Yes this will work with a USB 2.0 computer.
I currently use this to move files between my PC that is USB 3.0 to my neighbors PC that is USB 2.0. My neighbor does not have internet, and I kindly bring him the files he asks for.

Can this drive be operated horizontally, as well as in the vertical position that is shown?

Yes it can be operated horizontally. But you might not get enough air flow to keep drive cool which could effect life span.

Can you configure this disk to not spin-down when idle? If you can, will the device still perform reliably over time?

I have 28 of these drives that are powered up with ac all the time
They only run when you access them if your not using them they go to sleep they do not spin 24/7 only when you use them

It may depend on what, specifically you wnat to do with it, but I have mne connected as a network storage device/media server, and it is working fine on my Windows 10 system.

Can I leave this drive on 24/7 and use another software other than the WD backup software such as macrium reflect in order to create daily scheduled image or cloned backups? Or is this drive not detected my windows OS during sleep mode? Thanks

This drive is most certainly like all externals i have encountered.   When they "sleep" the enclosure just spins the hard drive down, but spins it back on when a read/write command is detected.  Sometimes a verry noticable deley can be felt when waking it up.

On the subject of other software,  you absolutely can use other backup software, you may need to reformat the drive to clean off any garbage that came bundled on it.   If your running a pc,  ntfs works fine,  just make sure you use the "eject" feature if you disconnect it while it has your backups.

The drive will allow you to drag and drop files as long as your computers operating will allow it.

Yes they are, if referring to an apple computer. And If you are also referring to using as a backup hard drive to save your information. But note, that once you plug it into the computer, the computer formats it only for that computer and that computer alone.

I doubt it is 5400, and not likely 10000.  But the drive's performance should be very acceptable at USB 3.0 speeds.
