Is there a power switch on the device?

No.  I unplug the device when necessary.  Although you didn't ask, I purchased 2 8TB storage drives and have had trouble with both.  I am careful using them but they both stopped responding.  One now will sometimes work after rebooting.  It is not reliable.  I can not recommend you purchase this product.

Can I hook this to a network router and use it as network storage?

Only if your router has a USB port, and even then only if your router also supports hard drives of this size. For example, I have an Asus AC-88U, which is a recent router but does not support drives over 2TB.

Question 4

Can this drive provide network storage when connected to synology rt2600ac router?  I'm concerned that the password protection would be a problem in that application.  Can the password be disabled?  If it can, am I right in presuming that would also disable the hardware encryption?

I do not know about the synology router question question since I do not have that unit. However, you are NOT required to setup a password on the WD MyBook and the hardware encryption ONLY comes into play when the password is set (i.e. The MyBook drive  will appear as simply another (albeit external) drive to your computer.  Hope this helps.

I wish I could answer you question. I just looked at the Microsoft site for this unit. While there is a connection for an external devices. But to be sure I would send you question to WD, they would know if it will work. If it will not, hopefully they will suggest something they make that will do the job. I know I saw an ad for external HD's for the Xbox One and One S.

Yes, but be aware it is a low power drive. Don't expect performance from the drive. Would be a decent drive for storing files and media. Probably not so good for the main drive in a system, unless you don't use the system much, just a constantly on machine.

You'll need drivers to take advantage of USB 3 and get the full capacity. I am not sure if they are included, but you can probably download them from somewhere. I only see compatibility back to Vista from WD.
