Hi people, does this plug in by a 3.5mm jack to your computer or usb? its hard to tell from the pictures.

Its a mix of both. The jack plugs the speakers to the power, and the usb links the power to the computer.

Is this the speaker I should buy for a CD player and stero system?

The sound is powerful. I stopped using my stereo for music, and just use my computer with these speaks, and the sound fills the rooms no problem. It would work great with a CD player and stereo system, just make sure you can plug it in. It's meant to go into a computer.
