will this work with a 55 in tv?

It will work sound-wise; however, it's designed to have the base of the TV sit on top of it. I wouldn't advise putting a TV this large on top of the unit due to weight considerations, even if the base is small enough to fit on the Bose unit.. If you're wall-mounting the TV, then you're okay. I would also add that this unit does not include a sub-woofer, and if you're getting a 55-inch TV, you probably have a bigger room to put it in, so you may want to consider something with better low range sound.

Does the Bose Solo have a provision for adding an external subwoofer?

No provision to add anything just able to use regular audio input cable or  optical input cable which is better if your TV has it. Cannot adjust base just ON / OFF is your only choice.

The only thing you can adjust is the volume period. No menu of any sort.

Sure I don't see why not it will connect to anything.  Optic or composit or HDMI.

Bought it as a gift for my dad and he loves it. Finally saw heard it myself when I visited for Thanksgiving and I was impressed as well. No sub-woofer so don't expect room shaking lows. You want that turn on your 6.1 surround system. You want good clean, clear sound for everyday TV you want this. Way better sound than the TV..
