just put the cartridge in my printer today, print appears rich and satisfactory;  purported number of pages is 300, can't verify this at present. I was very satisfied with prompt shipment.

Yes, LC103BKXL the XL denotes a higher yield, meaning the ink lasts more, usually twice as much. The more X's before L thehigher the yield. Think of it as a shirt size XXL lasts even longer.

We bought the printer new and installed the cartridges at the same time as set up.   I've printed about 500 sheets so far and have not had to replace any of the cartridges yet.

Sorry, I haven't tried it without colored ink installed.  I have the test print done but after two weeks still haven't got the wireless set up done, partly because of having to wait for information from the AV Firewall firm but partly because Brother instructions initially assume you have a wireless router and can hook to its network.  Only on failing at that and going online to see what's wrong do you know that unincluded Adhoc instructions have to be followed.
