Do I have to connect all 3 connections to use this device (USB, audio cable, and VGA) to connect my laptop to my TV?

Yes you need all 3 connections.  I am using it with a desktop PC, so having all the cables being able to reach to the appropriate ports is not a problem, but I have read reviews of this product where it was an issue with a laptop, so be careful.  In addition, I am unable to change the resolution - it's at a huge 640 x 480.  Neither the adapter company Bytecc or my TV manufacturer (I have an LG 42LN5700) was able to help me, so this is another issue with this item.

I have older Sony vaio with usb/vga input-output. Is the product compatible?

I used this on an old dell computer with VGA out only. The LCD tv did not have VGA but it had hdmi. As long as you have a vga out port you want to convert to HDMI it should work.

ok i have a vga monitor and was wondering if this will work since i want to connect it to my hdmi port of my graphics card?

No.  this will not work.  You would need an HDM to VGA adapter.  This is to basically plug a laptop that only has a VGA output to connect to an HDMI input on a monitor, tv, etc.

Will this work to connect an HDMI microprojector to an older laptop that has only VGA output and will it produce sound?

Hi, Yes I am quite sure it will work for that. You will need an hdmi cable to go from the converter to your projector hdmi imput as it doesn't come with a cable,
